The slaves would sing when they are unhappy and Frederick Douglass was amazed. In the Frederick Douglass it states, " Slaves sing most when they are are most unhappy." This explains that the slaves would sing to get rid of their stress and sadness they keep inside. Another piece of evidence to support how the singing affected Frederick Douglass states, " I have been utterly astonished, since I came to the north, to find persons who could speak of the singing, among slaves, as evidence of their contentment and happiness." This elucidates that Douglass was amazed by the singing of the slaves and how they sing to express their sadness. This is why the slaves would sing and how it affected Frederick Douglass.

In the text it states that “I frequently found myself in tears while hearing them. The mere recurrence to those songs, even now, afflicts me;” This piece of evidence shows that Douglass was affected by the slaves singing because it reminded them of there problem they had and Douglass word choice shows that. In addition the text states that “ I have sometimes thought that the mere hearing of those songs would do more to impress some minds with the horrible character of slavery,” This piece of evidence shows that the slaves would sing because of the horrible things that would happen during slavery.

According to the text, it states "At least, such is my experience. I have often sung to drown my sorrow, but seldom to express my happiness. This shows that he would do these things just to be happy. According to the text, it states "Crying for joy, and singing for joy, were alike uncommon to me while in the jaws of slavery. The singing of a man cast away upon a desolate island might be as appropriately considered as evidence of contentment and happiness, as the singing of a slave; the songs of the one and of the other are prompted by the same emotion." These pieces of evidence shows why slaves would sing and what they would do it for. This is why slaves sing, and this is how it affected Douglass.

The slaves sang because they were excited for their allowances but also sad. This also affected Douglass with anger and hatred. For example the text states "The slaves selected to go to the great house farm, for the monthly allowance for themselves and their fellow-slaves, were peculiarly enthusiastic. While on thier way, they would make the dense old woods, for miles around, reverberate with thier wild songs, revealing at once the highest joy and the deepest sadness." This shows how the slaves felt throughout thier time. Another example the text states "The hearing of those wild notes always depressed my spirit, and filled me with ineffable sadness. I have frequently found myself in tears while hearing them." This shows how Douglass felt about them singing in the miserable way.

According to the text it states, “They told a tale of woe which was then altogether beyond feeble comprehension; they were tones loud, long, and deep; breathed the prayer and complaints of soups boiling over with the bitterest anguish.” The songs that were sung by the slaves were songs of sadness, grief and hatred. Frederick Douglass also states, “The hearing of those wild notes always depressed my spirit, and filled me with ineffable sadness.” As you can see the songs had a huge and depressing affect on Frederick Douglass!!
