Vagus nerve stimulation therapy for the treatment of obesity works by "tricking" the brain into thinking the stomach is full. In 2015, the first vagus nerve stimulation device was approved by the FDA for the treatment of morbidly obese patients. This current therapy, named the Masetro Rechargeable System, is a device that is surgically implanted, along with lead wires and electrodes, into the abdomen. The vagus nerve receives signals from the device to help regulate gastric emptying and makes the brain believe the stomach is full. This current therapy utilizes batteries, and requires maintenance over time to recharge the batteries.
Dr. Wang's implanted device poses significant improvements over the current therapy systems available. This device, which is not yet named, is about the size of a penny, and does not utilize batteries, long wires or electronics. This devices uses nanogenerator technology which is powered by the movements of the stomach only. This means the device is only active when the stomach moves (when the subject eats).
In the article published by Nature Communications, Dr. Wang's team published their findings from laboratory studies using lab rats. The rats that received the intervention lost an average of 38% more body fat than the control group (Yao et al., 2018).

Currently, over 71% of American adults are overweight, and almost 40% are obese (CDC/National Center for Health Statistics, 2017). This national health crisis only continues to worsen. Although an increasing number of insurance companies are covering the cost of bariatric surgeries such as gastric bypass and gastric sleeve, they are not appropriate for every patient. Today, researchers are continually using new approaches to combat diseases, including obesity. With nanotechnology's incorporation into healthcare, major surgical procedures may not be the only option for patients.

Although these innovations are promising, it is imperative as nursing professionals that we have a holistic and global approach to health disparities such as obesity. These devices are not, and should not be intended to "fix" the problem of obesity. As nurses, we must be able to discuss potential options for our patients, and also address factors that contribute to their obesity such as behavioral, and socioeconomic factors.
