There is an epidemic of HIV, and an epidemic of people who have a preconceived notion of what they believe HIV is. Our society needs to do better on how we treat others with disease such HIV, and we need to better educate on these topics because without educating ourselves, all judgments and opinions create a stigmatism around HIV and the community around it. The spread of illness and death amongst mature adults are increasing and treatments are not available for everyone. Between different continents, the access to medicaments for HIV/AIDS are limited, because of social and economic conditions.

A challenge to the expansion of accessibility to HIV treatments, involves issues surrounding access to antiretroviral therapy in the developing world, where HIV treatment remains very expensive. More and more data suggest that high HIV/AIDS related death are actually happening in the developed world as well. This all could be linked in part due to limited use of highly active antiretroviral therapy. These populations of lower socio-economic status, ethnic minorities, and drug users (injection based) have a higher chance to an HIV related death due to problems with access to antiretrovirals and retention in treatment programs.

The provision of healthcare services to marginalized populations has historically been compromised by complexities of the many barriers that are put up to receive the proper treatment. This is particularly is the case for those addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, mentally ill, and the homeless populations. The stigma and socio-economic barriers have done nothing more than stopping many from getting the treatment that they deserve and need.

Globally, there is a positive correlation between the prevalence of HIV and poverty of that region-whether this correlation is measured by gross domestic product per person, income inequality, or Human Poverty Index it just places emphasis on the lack knowledge and education of prevention of this disease. Many think the correlation of poverty and lack of education can attribute to these high percentages of HIV, but no matter how much education is thrown at a population that is disadvantage, it may not prevent the spread of this disease. Many are held back by the economic barriers, even if educated on prevention, many poor people are unable to afford necessities to prevent HIV, such as condoms, medication, or treatments.

No matter how much progress is made with the HIV/AID there is still a heavy stigmatization and discrimination of the disease present day. Through the fear of stigmatization and many other reasons, many people falsely believeHIV/AIDS is always associated with death, HIV is highly associated with behaviors that could face backlash from others (such as homosexuality, drug use, sex work, or infidelity), HIV is only transmitted through sex, which overall, sex is taboo subject in many cultures, or HIV infection is the result of personal irresponsibility and many associates that behavior with deserving punishment.
