School doors around the world have been closed for several months to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. During this crisis, we have seen an incredible amount of large-scale efforts to use technology in support of remote learning. At the same time, this crisis has exposed the challenges for technology in education, including many inequities starting at the lack of access to computers and the internet. This is also always accompanied by challenges and concerns such as:

1. Lack of time to:

plan for technology integration;

explore creative ideas and read about/observe others;

practice strategies for embedding technology within the curriculum;

evaluate the efficiency of implementation efforts and effectiveness of strategies;

develop skills with evolving technologies;

maintain personal skills with updated technologies;

expand personal and professional technical skills.

2. Lack of teacher expertise with personal and professional technical skills. A tradition of inadequate and/or inappropriate technology training opportunities. Lack of uninterrupted, on-demand access to hardware, software, networks, and other technologies both in school and outside of school.

3. Lack of:

a fiscal resource to provide personal and professional technology training;

access to necessary expertise and support for the use and implementation of technology;

infrastructure for and maintenance/repair of technology integration efforts;

budgets for continuing costs of technology utilization.

4. Lack of technical and administrative support essential to the adoption, utilization, and integration of technology in the classroom.

5. Lack of value attributed to the effort required for the efficient and effective implementation of technologies within the classroom. Lack of environments that foster a spirit of risk-taking, experimentation, and which anticipate struggles and setbacks with all implementation efforts.
