Ethnography Overview

Media ethnographers "study how audiences assume the active role of constructing the meaning of media texts" (Beach, 2007, p.55). In particular, they study audiences as consumers, identify construction and virtual communities, social connections, and class, gender, and racial identities (Beach, 2007). These studies provide a complex perspective on audiences’ media participation and challenge some of the simplistic claims made about the overpowering effects of media on people (Beach, 2007, p.55).

The process of conducting an ethnography starts with selecting a topic and posing a research question (Beach & Finders, 1999). Then, the ethnographer must gain entry to the group and become a participant observer (Beach & Finders, 1999). As an observer, he or she must collect and analyze artifacts, field notes, and any interviews that were conducted (Beach & Finders, 1999). The last part of conducting an ethnography involves writing a research report and reflecting on one's experience as a researcher (Beach & Finders, 1999). According to Beach and Finders (1999), "engaging students as ethnographers of their own communities may change relationships within the classroom, allowing students to gain understanding of diverse experiences” (p.89).
An ethnography can be conducted in a variety of different places. Beach (2007) suggests places like computer and video game chat rooms, fan clubs and fan fiction, internet chat rooms, talk-radio shows, teen zines and web pages, music clubs, sports events and rock concerts, theme or amusement parks, and shopping malls. For teachers that are looking for sites within the school, the lunch room, classroom, and sports events would be possibilities (Beach & Finders, 1999, p.85). All of these sites allow students to question stereotypical concepts of peer groups (Beach & Finders, 1999, p.85).
