My Mother and Father are Black that's as far as we know regarding ethnic background. I was told that I was apart of a minority group.  This prospective created a narrow image of the world in my eyes. I actually saw things in Black and white growing up. This was my  minority identity. A sense of belonging to a nondominant group (Martin, J. N. & Nakayama Pg 204). As I grew older I questioned my mother a lot  about our culture and history, but she had as much knowledge about the past as I. I also grew up in a single parent home. It seems that in my culture Black women are head of the house. Black women are the head of 29% of all Black households which is more than twice the rate for ‘all women’ at 13 percent. At the age of 19 I joined the U.S.M.C. I knew I had to see the world through new eyes. I immediately had a culture shock in the military. I was able to speak and build relationships with people from all walks of life. I started to realized that my struggles actually were the same as others. Not every aspect but close enough to connect. After my tour in Afghan I realized who I was in the eyes of the world. My daughter was born when I was 21. I promised myself that I would not allow her to see color but character. The pattern of single parent household latched onto me, because I am a single dad. I realized that the cycle that exist in American has to start small.
