In my discussion board post, I reflected on how a student who doesn’t have their physiological needs, like hunger, probably won’t be able to focus in class. I think some needs will be out of a professor’s control, but we can direct them to places that can (hopefully) help. However, I think as an instructor, I can create a classroom environment that incorporates these needs. For example, creating a safe space in which students feel comfortable to share answers, helping ESL students feel like they belong in our country and our campus community, and giving positive feedback incorporate components from safety needs, love needs, and esteem needs respectively. While it may be difficult for a teacher to help meet a student's self-actualization needs, I believe teachers who are excited about their students' potential can help motivate a student to continue improving beyond the classroom, whether it be to continue pursuing English, a career path, or something else entirely; sometimes, students have a hard time seeing their potential and need someone else to identify it.
