Tech tools can provide great resources for students to collaborate together and use things online to further their knowledge in linguistically diverse settings. They can also be great for ELLs to find more resources and continue their knowledge.

READ ALOUDS

-Read alouds can be great for ELLs as they provide that in person experience to learn more. This is also a great time to ask questions and learn new things in read alouds. As a teacher you could read Black english and other types of english as well to help your kids learn more about the different types of english and provide them with more of a diverse experience.

WORD CHARTS

-As seen on pages 220-222 another strategy is to use word charts. Word charts can be created for different topics the students are going to learn. It will have 4 columns at the top and then can have however many going down the side with the words in them. The columns at the top will be word, meaning, related words, and picture. The students will fill these charts out in order to ensure they fully understand the words, and have this as a reference to look back on.

BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE STUDENTS

-Showing interest in student's lives can get them to open up more to you and help you to understand them better. This can also help you know what areas they need help in, or things they need to work on. Reinforcing that you are there to help them with things they need can help them feel safe and cared for.

LEARNING BY DOING

-Learning by doing can help students to get first hand experience with things and become more knowledgable. This method was created by John Dewey. This is becoming more popular in school as we see more hands on activities. This could include things like think-pair-share or partner assignments. Having students interact and especially ELLs can help them further their knowledge.

FACILITATING STRUCTURED CONVERSATIONS

-This is a great strategy for all things in a classroom. Collaboration between students is crucial everywhere, but can help ELLs become more comfortable in different content areas. This is a low stress method and should be something done often to make it more casual.

CHANTS AND SONGS

-Chants and songs that include academic vocabulary can support ELLs. Chants and songs come easier to people when learning, so this is a good way to create the new vocabulary for elementary school kids. Doing them for a few days or weeks until they fully understand the song and can sing it all can be very beneficial

PREVIEW-VIEW-REVIEW

-This method is great for ELLSs. You as the teacher can let them preview the lesson in their home language and then you present the lesson in english and let them review with both. This can help to support students in feeling more comfortable because you are showing them that respect that you care about their home language.

WRITING

-As basic as it sounds writing is a great instructional strategy for ELLs. There are apps like book creator app that can allow students to write digital books. There are different features on these apps and one of them if voice record. This can help the students to learn more about how to spell the words that they know by using the voice record.

Constructive analysis is a strategy for comparison. This can be used to compare between different languages/english types. You can use books that are written in languages different than your own. This can help to show that you care about the kids in your class and their cultures. It is important to give direct implicit instruction when reading these books.
