A motif is a topic that comes up over and over again within a story. One of the Motifs in Persepolis is when Marjane is given books to read so that she could learn things. On page 12 it shows that when she was given books they were mainly about the children of Palestine and Fidel Castro.

On page 70 a newspaper heading states as "Russian Spy Executed", this referring to Marjane's Uncle Anoosh. This goes along with the common theme of knowledge being power because it was stated that he was executed for being a Russian Spy, but that was not really the case. The main reason he was executed was because he had too much knowledge and the government knew that if he figured out what they were doing then he could have the potential and knowledge to stop them.

One of the problems that has to do with this theme is that when Anoosh was "executed for being a Russian spy" that wasn't the real reason. He was executed for having too much knowledge. So this created a conflict because the other people didn't know the real story they were just reading what was put in the newspapers. This especially made Marjane upset and she blamed it all on God.
