This event helped lead to the civil war because congress would have to figure out a way to split the Louisiana territory into free states and slave states without either side getting angry and wanting more land.</div>]]></description>

         <title>1808 end of the slave trade</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1808 both the north and the south congressman came together and agreed to abolish the slave trade. The only reason the south agreed to abolish the slave trade is because&nbsp; they get to immediately make the slave children slaves as well. This is a key event in the early 19th century because this was the end of all slave trade in the U.S. and more people being taken from their homes to become slaves. Also, this helped lead to the civil war because with the slave trade being shut down, the south would want more slave states so, there would be more fugitive slaves.</div>]]></description>

         <title>1819 U.S. bought the Florida Territory</title>

That land included Florida and parts of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. This is a key event in the early 19th century because with the Florida territory being gained and below the Missouri compromise line, it would soon be a slave state. This event contributed to the start of the civil war because when the Florida territory became a slave state, the north thought the slave state power in congress would increase a lot so, it increased the tension between the north and the south.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In order to build a rail-road from New Orleans to California, the U.S. negotiated with Mexico to gain a small piece of land called the Gadsden Territory. This is a key event in the early 19th century because without the purchase of the Gadsden territory, the U.S. wouldn't be able to build the rail-road from New Orleans to California to transport goods and people across the country. This helped contribute to the start of the civil war because even though the Gadsden purchase was used for a rail-road, the states that were made of the territory were all slave states. Due to the Gadsden purchase, becoming slave states, the relationship between the north and the south weakened because now the north wanted equal free states as slave states.</div>]]></description>
