Beyond her political contributions, Wangari Maathai is most notably famous for founding the Green Belt Movement in 1977, an organization that focused on planting trees and environmental conservation. She incorporated advocacy and empowerment for women into the Green Belt Movement. Since she started the movement, over 51 million trees have been planted, and over 300,000 women have been trained in trades that help them earn income for their families.
