Digital Ingestible Sensors - also known as smart pills - are a recent innovation to improve the adherence to medication regimens.

Understanding how it works can be slightly complex. According to the Wall Street Journal, there is a patch that the patient wears on their abdomen and can detect the sensor within the pill when it is ingested. It can also monitor activity levels and sleep patterns. Your doctor would be able to see this information and determine whether or not certain medications are effective. (WSJ, 2018)

The idea behind it would be used in the field of mental health and behavioral modifications, such as schizophrenia, bipolar I disorder, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, drug abuse, and pain. Per the article on patient landscape analysis for these sensors, the developers of the digital pills also focus on the treatment of cardiac disorders, diabetes, hepatitis C, AIDS, cancer, tuberculosis, and the monitoring of patients’ use of opioid drugs after surgery, and other conditions when admission may be impaired due to the characteristics of the patient’s behavior. (Litvinova, 2022)

I definitely see a valuable aspect with these ingestible sensors in their use with mental health medications and medications for the elderly. With patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, just missing one dose of medication can impact their next few doses and can lead to complete changes in their behavior. A lot of elderly patients try to live alone, even as they age and have family nearby that can check on them as needed but often forget to take their medications. I also see the need with medications that are important such as transplant medications, blood pressure medications, anti-seizure, and any medications with small therapeutic window. I recently had a patient that we discussed birth control and the mother was concerned that the patient would forget to take her contraception medication, as was the patient. This could be useful to remember to take as we know that even one missed dose can increase the risk of pregnancy. I do think there is definitely more education and investigation that can be done as this can be taken too far and needs to be used only with patient consent.

Arranging was my top strength which I believe coincides with leadership because it involves getting things done with organization, flexibility, and maximum productivity. As a learner, we want to continuously improve ourselves which will also better our team and our innovation. Adaptability is key as well because you are being handed every problem as the leader and need to be able to be flexible and problem solve without the issue ruining the whole production. This also ties into the restorative aspect where I tend to be good at figuring out what the overall problem is and solve it quickly. Strategic is my final quality that I think works well in the leadership role because it allows me to critically think about the overall goal and find themes and patterns that have previously worked well, and how we can proceed forward for the most positive overall success.
