1) Hand compass because this would the explorers to know where they are going. If they did not know where they're going then they may end up somewhere they don't want to be.

2) 30 steels for striking or making a fire, because when we stop, or if we needed a fire we would be able to start one easily. It would make sure that you could start the fire that you would need to survive.

3) A handsaw would be important to their survival because the people on the expedition could use it to chop wood. Chopped wood would be helpful because you can use it to start fires to keep you warm and use the wood to build shelter.

4) Writing paper, ink, and crayons to make sure that you can document and record your findings. Also to draw and create maps of what you are discovering.

5) Mosquito curtains would be important for survival because at night when they're sleeping mosquitoes may be around. With this then they could be kept from possible disease-carrying mosquitoes.

6) Coats would be important for this trip because if there were to be a storm you would be able to protect your skin. It would also be helpful during the winter to keep yourself warm.

7) 15 prototype Model 1803 muzzle-loading .54 caliber rifles would be helpful so they could kill some animals along the way for food and also it would help with survival. If there was an animal that happened to be attacking them they could use them for safety.

8) Other drugs for blistering, salivation and increased kidney output would be important so that if there was an emergency, or someone would get hurt they would be able to help heal them.

9) In the cold winter month blankets would be helpful to keep them warm. It would also be helpful because they could use blankets to carry things in if they grab all four corners.

10) A two-volume edition of Linnaeus (the founder of the Latin classification of plants) because when we run into a plant that we don’t know, we would need to know what to do with that plant. Or if we were to have a reaction to a plant, we would know how to handle that reaction.

The Corps of Discovery

Captain: I would choose William Clark as the captain of The Corps of Discovery. I would choose him because he knows the land, he know how to travel and how to write maps. He would be able to lead up back from the travel and could help get back to where they started. He knows how to write and document things, he would be able to make the right choices on how to get to the Pacific Ocean. He would be able to communicate with others, and would be able to negotiate with the natives if needed.

He was part of the army, so he knows how to defend himself. He would be able to protect others. He knows how to build forts, draw maps, and lead packs, and I believe he would be a good leader to explore the new land. He was successful when he was suppose to spy on the Spanish. He earned leadership skills, and he knows how to lead others while traveling, since he has prior experience.
Private: I chose Private William Bratton. I would choose him for the Corps of Discovery because he was, “the best young woodsmen & Hunters in this part of the Country.” He would be useful for hunting food. He would also be good at repairing objects, and when they traveled they agreed to repair some metal objects for them. This caused a good relationship between the Native tribe and the Corps of Discovery.

Bratton knows what to do in serious situation. When they were traveling Bratton encountered a grizzly bear, and shot him in the center. Bratton and the Corps of Discovery then found the bear and killed it. Even though he later became semi-paralyzed when journeying back, he was a great help with discovering land. He was able to make allies with other Native Tribes, and was able to kill many animals for the Corps of Discovery.

Non-military: I would choose Sacagawea as my non-military member. I would choose her because she changed the entire look of traveling. She caused many people to notice a woman could explore with others. She knew many other Native languages. That would help with communicating with other Native American Tribes, which can cause good trading and good relations with them later on.

When traveling you will need different types of materials to travel with. For example horses, Sacagawea is very important in horse trading, because of her heritage many Natives trust her with trading. This is very important for many other trading goods. It is also important that Sacagawea was with them traveling, because without her many Native Tribes would not have trusted Lewis and Clark, leading to many of the Native trying to keep their land.

Native American Tribe

One tribe that Lewis and Clark encountered during their trip was the Oto Indians. The Oto Indians were a Native American Tribe that was part of the Southern Sioux tribes who lived along the Missouri River, near present-day Missouri and Nebraska border. Later smallpox had gotten into their tribe and had killed many of them. They then combined with neighboring Missouri Indians. They both hunted Buffalo and spent most of their time doing so.
When Lewis and Clark met the Oto Tribe, most were out hunting, and they sent two men to search for the Natives, but came up empty. Lewis and Clark then kept heading up the river. Later some of the Oto and Missouri Tribe members found Lewis and Clark’s camp and the captains invited six or seven members to a council the next morning. They then came together and the Tribe was advised that they were to protect against the Spanish and French. They did end up helping Lewis and Clark, they helped protect them, and they traded goods. They kept the peace between the Oto Tribe and president Jefferson, when Lewis and Clark were exploring.

Plant and Animal Life

Plant 1) One plant that the explorers discovered was the golden currant. The members may have found this plant interesting because it was so tall and it produces berries. They may have thought this would be a good way to obtain fruits. This plant grows 6-10 feet tall and when it blooms it has a vanilla scent. This may have been unusual because most flowers don't have a scent or all smell the same. This would have been used to benefit the lives of the American people because if they can plant more of these then it could produce more food.
Plant 2) Another plant found along the way is cottonwood. I think that the members of the corps of discovery would think this was useful because they later made many things from it. I don't think there was anything unusual to them about this because it's a tree and they have seen trees before. It looks like a normal tree with leaves and is on average 100 feet tall. The cottonwood tree would help benefit the lives of Americans because it helped them to build canoes. Later on they also started using it for chairs, tables and ate food cooked over cottonwood fires. It also made it possible to make wagons and portages.
Animal 1) One of many new animals that Lewis and Clark encountered was a grizzly bear. I think the members of the corps were scared of this because it's big and it took multiple shots for them to finally kill the first one they encountered. One feature that may have been unusual or strange for the corps to see is how big the bears are since they are 300-800 pounds. This may have been intimidating because there may not be any animal this big in the northeastern part of the US. It does not specifically say what the fur was used for but I can infer that they used it for fur. SInce the fur trade between the French and Indians was so popular the Americans may have thought using fur from the bears for trade was a good idea.
Animal 2) Another new animal the explorers came across was the cutthroat trout. I think that the members did not think too much of it because it's a normal sized fish and that isn't too unusual. Lewis wrote down that they had seen something similar to this in the eastern part of the United States the differences Lewis wrote about were, “But the specks on these are of a deep black … these are furnished long sharp teeth on the palate and tongue and have generally a small dash of red on each side behind the front ventral fins." This animal would help benefit the lives of Americans because they could use it for food. Also, the fish could be used for recreational use if they were into fishing.

Two of the places that the corps stopped on their journey were Spirit Mound and Beaver head Rock.

Spirit Mound is located relatively close to Vermilion, South Dakota. There were no people that lived here but many animals did. There was no interaction between people and spirit mound since nobody lived here. Animals and people move from place to place here by crossing the mountain and walking across the prairie. In this region, there are hundreds of bison, Native Americans at the bottom of the hill, an expansive prairie, and many flocks of birds. It is also very hot here.

Beaverhead Rock is located near Dillon, Montana. The Shoshone people lived here. The Shoshone people adapted to this area by having horses which helped them to get around places easier. Horses would help to cross the mountain. Living things move from place to place here by going up or around the mountain if they want to get to the other side, and most of the Shoshone Indians had horses. In this region there is a river because it tells us that Sacagawea recognizes the river and where her relations live.
