Both mothers parallel each other in many ways. One is that both mothers leave there families. Sal's mother leaves at the begining of the book and Phoebe's mother leaves on page 116. Some differences is that Sal's mother doesn't return but Phoebe's mother does. Her mother returns on page 232. Each girl learns that her mother isn't perfect.

In the end, Sal becomes more comfortable talking about people like her mom, and not missing her as much as she did. I feel like going on that road trip was like a closure for Sal, so she could stop worrying. For example on page 262 Sal thinks "I realized that out whole trip out to lewiston had been a gift from gram and gramps to me. They were giving me a chance to walk in my mothers moccasins." Phoebe on the other hand was facing how to achieve more things by herself while her mother was gone. She also realized how much she actually cared about her mom by trying to find out what happened to her, or if she was murdered. For example on page 172 when she reported to the police that someone had killed her mother

On page 3, it states, " On the night that we got the bad news--that she was not returning," and that implies that her mom is dead. Sal prays to the trees and always thinks of her mom.
Phoebe goes full out investigating looking for her mother. On page 171, it states, "Phoebe and I stood for 5 minutes outside the police sation," and this for Phoebe's mom. This is what Phoebe did to try to find her mom and deal with her being away.

One way that they were alike was not about the mothers, but Phoebe and Sal's reaction. Did Sal's mom leave to Idaho because of her?

they both did but it wasnt just physical it was also very emotional. For example on page 3 it says "On the night that we got the bad news that my mother is not returning...". So now this girl needs to live with out a mother and growing up with out a mother which may cause growing pains which. Which in this case are more emotional than physical. Which would also effect the family structure needing to fill the crucial spot of a mother figure

Sal's mom left but her mom would call every night to make sure she was safe. on page 3 Sal states," on the night we got the bad news- that she was not returning." This states that Sal's mom wasn't coming back ever, that she was killed. Phoebe's mother left and doesn't know where she is and why she left. Phoebe told Sal and her family that her mother is lost in the world. Sal realizes on page 3 that beneath Phoebe's story is her own story. they both live with a father and are both curious of where their mothers are.

The stories of the two mothers are parallel because both Sal and Phoebe's mothers left their homes and their families. On pg. 3, "My father started chipping away at a plaster wall in the living room of our house in Bybanks shortly after my mother left us one April morning. Our house was an old farmhouse that my parents had been restoring, room by room. Each night as he waited to hear from my mother, he chipped away at that wall. On the night that we got the bad news-that she was not returning-he pounded and hammered on that wall with a chisel and a hammer." On pg. 117 " When Phoebe's father came home Phoebe showed him his note. He opened it and sat down, staring at the piece of paper. Phoebe looked over his shoulder and read his note aloud; I had to go away. I can't explain. I'll call you in a few days." Sal's and Phoebe's mother stories are different because Sal's mother dies but Phoebe's mother doesn't. On pg.253 " It was a pleasant place. The Snake River curved behind this section, and tall, full-leaved trees grew here and there across the lawn. The sheriff parked the car and led me up a path toward the river, and there, on a little hill overlooking the river and the valley, was my mother's grave." This is how the two mothers are similar. The two mothers are different because Phoebe's mother comes back and Sal's mother dies. Sal learns that her mother really did die and that she finally believes that she's not coming back. Phoebe learns that her mother has a son and that was why she went away and who the "lunatic" was that kept showing up at her house.

Phoebe, like Sal, is experiencing lots of emotions and fears about her mother’s disappearance. Trying to deny the inevitable truth that she temporarily left, she is convinced that someone kidnapped or killed her mother. Because of her mother’s disappearance, phoebe is rude and mean to everyone, including Sal. "I hated her that day. I didn't care how upset she was about her mother, I really hated her, and I wanted her to leave. I wondered if this was how my father felt when I threw all those temper tantrums. Maybe he hated me for a while" Chapter 26 p 155.

Sal also denies the fact that something bad has happened to her mother. on page 3, " My father started chipping away at a plaster wall in the living room of our house in Bybanks shortly after my mother left us one April morning. Our house was an old farmhouse that my parents had been restoring, room by room. Each night as he waited to hear from my mother, he chipped away at that wall. On the night that we got the bad news-that she was not returning-he pounded and hammered on that wall with a chisel and a hammer." This shows that she and her father knows that her mother is dead, but she still insists that shes alive and thats why she goes on a trip with her grandparents. During the book, she constantly wishes that things where the way they used to be. Because of her grief, Sal is "ornery and stubborn has a donkey". When they get to idaho, she finally sees her mothers gravestone and knows that shes dead.

I think he was willing to send her on trip so she would get closure and see for herself that her mother was truly gone. Also so she could stop being anxious and worrying about her mom. In the end i feel like it did achieve its purpose, because Sal is more accepting that her mother is dead and isn't coming back. She also seemed more comfortable talking about her. For example on page 263 Sal thinks "Phoebe's tales were like my fishing in the air: for a while, i needed to believe my mother was not dead and that she would come back."

Sal needed to see the gravestone and see that her mother isnt alive somewhere. The trip did acheive its purpose because when they got to idaho, phoebe got to see her mothers grave stone and finally have closure knowing that she didnt leave them. Sal is able to more freely talk about her mother and able to say that she is dead. for example on My father started chipping away at a plaster wall in the living room of our house in Bybanks shortly after my mother left us one April morning. Our house was an old farmhouse that my parents had been restoring, room by room. Each night as he waited to hear from my mother, he chipped away at that wall. On the night that we got the bad news-that she was not returning-he pounded and hammered on that wall with a chisel and a hammer."

The disappearance of Pheobe's mom had to do with loosing a child because on page 234 when mrs. Winterbottom came back from her dissapearence she came in with the lunatic and said "Mike is my son." ... "I had to give him up for adoption..." so, she had to leave to meet up with him.Pheobes mother lost a child but in a different way than Sal's mom.

Her father knows that his wife is dead, but does Sal know too? Many times the author hints at Sal’s knowledge of her mother without actually saying that her mother is dead. For example when Sal says “the night we got bad news-that she was not returning,” it can be inferred that her not returning means that she is dead. If Sal knew that her mother was dead why was her father willing to send on the trip? He wanted for Sal to be with her mother spiritually for her birthday.

When she is at her mothers grave she hears a "true, sweet birdsong". This is the author hinting at her mother because her mother was "true," and "sweet". Even though her mother isn't physically there the bird is a symbol of her mother being there spiritually. I feel that the trip did achieve its intended purpose even though there were some things that didn't go how they thought they would go (Gram's stroke, Sal having to drive herself from the hospital to her mothers grave on the scary road, etc.) because she got to spiritually see/ be with her mother.

One of these ways is that they both experience growing pains as their mothers leave because it is a big change to adapt to and it causes a lot of fear. They say/think things like "I wanted everything to be like it was," but nothing ended up being "like it was,". Their lives changed dramatically. After Sal's mom died they away moved from Bybanks, Kentucky and were introduced a whole life without Sal's mother.
When saying that the girls are expierencing '' growing pains", they might be growing physically but what the author is really talking about is how they are experiencing growing pains emotionally because they are going through hard changes. For example, Sal is going through growing pains because of her mother, on page 3 when it said " That night we got the bad news- he pounded on the wall with a chisel and a hammer." That shows that they had expierenced something major which lead to "growing pains." Also with Pheobe on page 151 it showed many times of her going through a hard time because of her mother being gone. For example when she said " Maybe I should stay home. I think I should be here if she calls." you can tell she's going through hard times/ growing pains with her mother.

I think the mothers parallel in many ways because for one they both leave there families including there daughters. Sal's mother leaves her in the beginning of the story while phoebe's mother left her around the middle of the story. But they are different because Sal's mother actually came back to her when phoebe's mother didn't. On page 5 it says "Gram and Gramps wanted to see momma, who was resting peacefully in Lewiston, Idaho" Also on page 172 it said " or possibly a kidnapping. But the kidnapping might turn into a murder
