Benefits of AVID in High School by Ms. Acosta

Hello there, some of my 8th grade AVID students are thinking about dropping AVID in high school and they are asking why they should stick with the program. They feel that they "don't need it". As you may recall from when you were younger, it is difficult to foresee the benefits of the program when they are so far into the future. Please share reasons how the program has helped you and why they should stay in the program. Thank you! <3 Ms. Jacqui

When I was in middle school I was just like you guys. Seeing people drop out of AVID little by little I wanted to do the same. With the help of Ms. Jacqui, Ms. Navarro and many more from AVID I decided to continue the AVID route. I now realize as a Junior in high school that I made the right decision. Don't let others peer pressure you to quit AVID. It may seem like it is hard work but you need to look at the long term affects. Those who left the AVID route don't know what a personal statement is, but those in AVID have already completed half of those essays. You may struggle, you may think that you don't want to go to college but seeing everyone applying for universities will drive you to do the same. It will give you that extra push that can help you succeed. I am very thankful that I had a chance to be in this program. Thank you once again Ms. Jacqui and I hope that the rest will understand and see the positive effects of the program.

AVID is an amazing opportunity that isn’t giving to many students. If you have the chance in being in the program you should take full advantage. AVID is stressful knowing you have to turn in a binder every Friday and me being the not so smart person would end up doing my binder Thursday night. High school is going to get harder and you might think about dropping out of AVID to avoid stress but honestly you have amazing AVID tutors and teachers that will help you along the way. Don’t forget that hard work gets you to success. They will make sure you are on the right track to a 4 year university by helping you get your grades up and recommending you what classes to take. AVID is also filled with many fun activities, there is AVID Knott's night and a Junior trip to San Fransisco to go visit the colleges up North. I am currently a Junior at Santiago High school and don’t regret being in AVID for the past 4 years, they have taught me so many useful things and helped me create amazing relationships with my AVID family.

BTW Mrs.Jacqui has always been my favorite because she is amazing! -Lynnete Ruiz
