Social Consequences (Global):

A social consequence of the coronavirus is that some of the safety precautions made to counter this new disease may negatively affect the elderly. For example, the new regulations about wearing face masks when going outside may negatively affect elderly who have health conditions such as cardiovascular diseases which hinder their breathing. This can lead to the elderly being very vulnerable to this new disease.

People with disabilities such as physical impairment often face issues in finding good healthcare services due to discrimination and disgrace. Another social consequence of Covid-19 is that healthcare services would be less accepting to treat people with disabilities, which leaves them at a higher risk of infection or developing illnesses that could have been subdued if treated earlier. Disabled people may also have trouble keeping safe from Covid-19, for example, people with physical impairments may be hindered from keeping good personal hygiene as they might need help that requires close contact. This would increase the risk of people with disabilities being infected. Another example is that having to wear masks when outside may negatively affect people with breathing issues or a disease that impairs their lung function. Having to wear a mask when outside on top of their already poor lung function can be hard on them.

https://www.un.org/development/desa/dspd/everyone-included-covid-19.html#:~:text=If%20not%20properly%20addressed%20through,the%20medium%20and%20long%20term.

Economical Consequences (Local):
Due to the effects of Covid-19, the unemployment rate has risen by 6.4%, with almost 260,000 people being unemployed from August to October in 2020. More significantly, 32% of people aged between 15-29 and 33% of people aged between 45-59 were unemployed during this period of time. The number of under-employed people has risen up to 148,000 while the median working hours per week has seen a notable decrease. Furthermore, the median monthly household income has been rapidly declining ever since the emergence of Covid-19, down to HK$26,000 in the third quarter of the GDP. On a year-over-year basis, these figures represent an 8.4% drop in income, which is the largest decline since the third quarter in 2002.

https://www.legco.gov.hk/research-publications/english/2021rb01-challenges-and-economic-impacts-arising-from-coronavirus-disease-2019-20201214-e.pdf

Question: how many people are affected by covid in China? What did the governments do?

Perspective: Xi JinPing, middle/working class, impoverished group, elderlies

Evidence: There’s only a short term influence in how covid affects the economy in China. The economy only dropped by 2%, which was really stable compared to other countries. Although the epidemic situation in China has gradually stabilized, the severe situation in the world still inevitably impacts China's economy. Access to residential compounds was banned to people not registered as living within them. Restaurants closed for around 2.5 months, only recently re-opening. Much domestic travel required quarantine upon arrival at destination for 14 days, and a similar policy was introduced for international travel once the pandemic was confirmed as a global problem. Right now, even foreigners with valid visas and working permits are not allowed back into China.

Source: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/gch2.202000090 https://www.china-briefing.com/news/social-economic-impact-covid-19-china-recovery-potential/#:~:text=The%20government%20response%20ramped%20up,%2C%20only%20recently%20re%2Dopening.

Question: How do Hong Kong think about the importance of masks? How reliant are Hong Kong on masks?

Perspectives: The Hong Kong government, Carrie Lam

The Hong Kong government had set that wearing a mask out is compulsory and according to the research in Australia, surgical masks can cover over 80% of the respiratory virus; moreover, all careers and healthcare workers are relying on masks in Asia. Hong Kong has a high standard of hygiene and prevention of covid needing 95% or above to pass the test Consumer Council did. The Hong Kong government has set up the rule, without wearing masks, citizens might be thrown behind bars or be paying HKD10,000 as a penalty unless they have a “reasonable excuse” and had been targeting the people who take activities indoors first in the “third wave” of coronavirus in HK.

https://www.hkmj.org/system/files/hkmj208566.pdf

https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/hong-kong-economy/article/3114020/coronavirus-hong-kong-masks-perform-well-against

https://www.scmp.com/comment/opinion/article/3115427/carrie-lam-should-lift-ban-masks-public-gatherings

Perspective (united nations):

Nine months after the discovery of Covid-19, over 30 million people have been infected, with over 1 million deaths being recorded. The continuously rising Covid-19 cases have proven how inadequate current health systems were and the many gaps in social protection and structural inequalities within and between countries. A consequence of this was the devastating impact on society and the economy.

At least half of the world's population has no access to proper healthcare services. This huge gap in health coverage is one of the reasons why Covid-19 is still causing pain and suffering. Universal Health Coverage requires governments to invest in common goods for health, surveillance and risk communication so the world may be prepared the next time a pandemic of this scale happens again. The UHC also requires public health programs to be inclusive and equitable, without financial barriers or dependence on financial status. All countries have also agreed to work towards the UHC as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The further transmission of Covid-19 must also be controlled through proven public health measures and coordinated global response. It is also a goal to ensure that everywhere has access to future Covid-19 vaccines, tests and proper treatment, and funding the ACT-Accelerator is the fastest way to end the pandemic.

https://www.un.org/en/coronavirus/scale-investment-universal-health-coverage-and-stronger-health-systems
