Story: Bill Gates Walks into a Café

Ten university students are having coffee in a café. Each student has $20 in their wallet, so their average wealth is $20. Suddenly, Bill Gates walks into the café. Now, if you calculate the average wealth of everyone in the café, it becomes billions of dollars. But the students still have only $20 each!

Message

The mean (average) can be misleading when there is an extreme value (outlier). A very large or very small value can greatly change the average, even though most of the data remain the same.

Remember

The mean tells us the average, but it does not tell the whole story.

Just because two variables are related does not mean that one causes the other. There may be another factor influencing both variables.

Having bigger shoes does not make people better at mathematics.

Age influences both shoe size and mathematics ability.
