Launching a city-wide photo campaign encouraging people to photograph themselves or others (with consent) interacting with hostile architecture in Toronto over the course of a month. The goal is to humanize the impact of these deterrents and raise awareness about their negative effects on society. Photos are to be posted across any and all social media platforms with the hashtag #HumanVHostileToronto and tag as many as you can from City Hall and news media (@TorontoCouncil @cityoftoronto @oliviachow @BravoDavenport @ausmalik @DianneSaxe @stephenholyday @CP24 @CTVToronto @globalnewsto @CityNews), along with a notation of the location.

Hostile architecture is installed across Toronto, and all over the world, under the guise of keeping neighbourhoods safe, however, if that was truly a concern, more effort and money would be put towards addressing the root of the issue. Hostile architecture serves no purpose other than to displace the homeless. Hostile architecture is NIMBY!

Last year alone, care provided by friends and family to Dementia patients equated to more than $7.3 billion dollars, 470 million hours and 235,000 full time jobs in Canada (Alzheimers Society, 2023).

As a previous Dementia patient care taker, the issue I wanted to raise awareness on is the current imbalance presented in Alzheimer's research. Research conducted has a particular focus on men despite women being disproportionately affected by the disease (Global News, 2023).

Raising awareness against women's domestic violence is an essential part of preventing it from happening. Talking about domestic and family violence can be difficult as it is a sensitive topic. But these messages can make a positive impact on the community.

Violence against women and girls is a human rights violation, and the immediate and long-term physical, sexual, and mental consequences for women and girls can be devastating, including death. Violence negatively affects women's general well-being and prevents women from fully participating in society. Domestic violence has severe consequences on women's mental and physical health, including their reproductive and sexual health. These include injuries, gynecological problems, temporary or permanent disabilities, depression and suicide, amongst others. Awareness-raising is crucial in spreading the clear message of zero tolerance for all forms of violence against women and girls. It's also vital to inform victims of their rights and available support services.

Anti-Bullying

Social Media Campaign

Beeee Kind 1-2 Another

Statistics show that at least 71% of students have been victims of bullying in school. The explosion of the internet makes it extra challenging. No longer confined to schoolyards, bullying today comes directly to people’s homes through social media, websites, and devices.

On this day, schools everywhere stand up against bullying. The holiday can have varying dates and names depending on the location. However, The United Nations has designated May 4 as Anti-Bullying Day. But the aim is universal, it is to prevent bullying and support kids who need help.

Bullying is as old as human society. Sometimes, the signs are apparent and willful. Other times, it is insidious and may exist where we least expect it — family, friends, or others close to the victim. But mostly, children are at higher risk since bullies prey on the most vulnerable. Every child has the right to grow up without experiencing abuse, especially in places of learning designed to be safe spaces. Anti-Bullying Day raises awareness about bullying and how to support children who may be silently suffering from it.
