However then with him really valuing this mitt and keeping it for a long time shows he cares. So the mitt represents love and empathy along with Holden's heart. When Holden says, "He got leukemia and died when we were in Maine on July 18, 1946. You'd have liked him" it shows he really did love his brother a lot and can like people (49).
