Lodestone was first used in China as early as 300 BC. They used pieces of lodestone and suspended them from a simple piece of string and served as one of the first compasses ever made and used in China. When The piece of lodestone is hung on a piece of string the lodestone aligns itself with Earth's magnetic field.
