Government shouldn't have any say on sexual orientation, preference, or gender identity. Abortion shouldn't be decided by the government but rather the person considering it. Parents, raise your kids how you want but don't abuse them. Don't arrest people for drug use, people have a right to a constitutional trial, innocent until proven guilty. We oppose the administration of the death penalty by the state. We stand by the II Amendment and believe in self-defense. We oppose any laws trying to restrict firearms and ammunition in any way.

When: December 11, 1971

How: The formation was prompted in part by price controls and the end of the Gold Standard implemented by President Richard Nixon. The Libertarian Party viewed the dominant Republican and Democratic parties as having diverged from what they viewed as the libertarian principles of the American Founding Fathers.

Who: David Nolan

Founding Principles:
1. Individualism. Libertarians see the individual as the basic unit of social analysis. Only individuals make choices and are responsible for their actions.
2. Individual Rights. Because individuals are moral agents, they have a right to be secure in their life, liberty, and property.
3. Spontaneous Order. The great insight of libertarian social analysis is that order in society arises spontaneously, out of the actions of thousands or millions of individuals who coordinate their actions with those of others in order to achieve their purposes.
4. The Rule of Law. Libertarian proposes a society of liberty under law, in which individuals are free to pursue their own lives so long as they respect the equal rights of others.
5. Peace. Libertarians have always battled the age-old scourge of war.
6. Limited Government. To protect rights, individuals from governments.

Property owners shouldn't be restricted by the government as long as they don't infringe upon the rights of others. The government shouldn't be held accountable for environmental damage. The government shouldn't subsidize a specific form of energy and should not be priced or allocated by the government. All persons are entitled to keep the fruits of their labor. We favor repealing any requirement that one must join or pay dues to a union as a condition of government employment. We favor free-market banking, with unrestricted competition among banks and depository institutions of all types. Markets are not actually free unless fraud is vigorously combated. We support free markets. We support the right of private employers and employees to choose whether or not to bargain with each other through a labor union. Bargaining should be free of government interference, such as compulsory arbitration or imposing an obligation to bargain. Education is best provided by the free market, achieving greater quality, accountability and efficiency with more diversity of choice. We recognize the freedom of individuals to determine the level of health insurance they want (if any), the level of health care they want, the care providers they want, the medicines and treatments they will use and all other aspects of their medical care, including end-of-life decisions. Retirement planning is the responsibility of the individual, not the government. Libertarians would phase out the current government-sponsored Social Security system and transition to a private voluntary system

The United States should both avoid entangling alliances and abandon its attempts to act as policeman for the world. The defense of the country requires that we have adequate intelligence to detect and to counter threats to domestic security. This requirement must not take priority over maintaining the civil liberties of our citizens. The Constitution and Bill of Rights shall not be suspended even during time of war. American foreign policy should seek an America at peace with the world. We support the removal of governmental impediments to free trade. Libertarians embrace the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights. We reject the idea that a natural right can ever impose an obligation upon others to fulfill that “right.” We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant. We support election systems that are more representative of the electorate at the federal, state and local levels. Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of individual liberty, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to agree to such new governance as to them shall seem most likely to protect their liberty.
