This is a tattoo I got for my 18th birthday that matches my Mom's she got in her 20s. At the time she got hers in the early 20s it was much more taboo to have a tattoo if you weren't part of an alternative subculture, but she was kind of a hippie so it was more normal for her to have one. Anyways I think the cultural norms for tattoos have changed a lot over the last 100 years.

I was at Stop and Shop the other day and saw this magazine- usually I wouldn't think twice about it but then I realized this was a really good example of a Cultural Norm in America- we celebrate Christmas nation wide even if you aren't really Christian it's the "normal" holiday and even though this magazine is being ambiguous about the holidays they make it obvious they mean Christmas.

This is a Grateful Dead mug with their trademark dancing bears- the Dead and their "dead-heads" are a big part of hippie/psychedelic subculture in America.

This is a sign that my boyfriend stole when we was a teenaged punk in Cape Cod- I think this is a good example of primary deviance because the conservative community on Cape Cod wasn't really accepting of him and his friends, so they used to do all kinds of rebellious things, like stealing traffic signs and cool signs they saw, like this one. This is also an example of petty crime/ criminal deviant behavior.

He is extended family even to my grandparents because he is my mom's half-brother and not related by blood to this set of grandparents in the photo. My extended family is really small but we mostly live in New England and see each other for holidays.

This is a picture of my boyfriend and I together that my Grandma took. I am a bisexual person but I am currently in a heterosexual relationship with him. Here my Grandpa is teaching us how to make his famous biscuits- an example of changing gender norms- in previous decades men did not learn how to cook anything and left it to the women, let alone they did not teach other men how to cook things. We had a great time making biscuits and enjoyed them a lot, and it was nice to learn from my Grandpa too who is a great teacher and biscuit maker :)

This is a letter from the State of Massachusetts I received about a form I filled out recently applying for a social program. This is a visual example of the bureaucratic nature of the state, and of the legal-rational authority that the state has. They can deny or accept me access to a social program based on a form and information they have stored about me in their systems. This has real world costs and benefits for the residents of Massachusetts.

This is a picture of my hand which, especially in the wintertime, is really pale white. I have white privilege in American society because of the color my skin - it grants me a lot of benefits that I may not always see or understand. While this doesn't mean that I won't face any hardships it means I won't face any racial hardships in the U.S. because we have a huge culture of normalized white supremacy

These are Blundstones boots (both me and my boyfriend have a pair) which are expensive 200+ dollar boots so I would consider them to be a status symbol. I actually got mine on the side of the road for nothing so I feel like a little bit of an imposter, ha. I also noticed that these are becoming very trendy among people my age (Gen-z) and among millenials too. Everyone in Northampton seems to be wearing these boots because they are so durable and so comfortable. I wonder if they will go out of fashion soon or if they will be outdated in ten years or if they will stand the test of time like other shoe brands such as converse or doc martens?

Stigma

One of my hobbies as a person who spends a lot of time outdoors and in nature is foraging herbs, berries and mushrooms and eating them/using them for medicinal purposes. This is a part of my herbs and mushroom collection from things I've foraged. I feel that there is a huge social stigma towards this hobby, especially towards mushroom foraging. People my age are starting to become more enthusiastic about it but a lot of the time when I tell people I forage mushrooms, people always act if if I'm going to pick the wrong one and die, or they act like it's such a dangerous hobby, or they don't want to learn from me or engage in the hobby at all. It's frustrating because a lot of mushrooms are easy to ID and have no poisonous lookalikes, and they are very good for you. I often feel shot down by groups of people when I talk about my hobby because of the stigma against mushroom foraging. Also, they stereotype me sometimes or assume that I'm really into psychedelic mushrooms.
