• Transportation-many families who lack transportation are unable to make it to school. There is no city bus line that goes directly to the school, thus making it very hard for families to send their children. Due to it being a charter school, enrollment is open to children outside of the immediate neighborhood, so walking safely is not an option.

• Lack of connection to resources-many families who have fallen on hard times need help with rent, utilities, and food, yet fail to get those resources because they simply do not know how.

• Someone to help connect them and guide them through applying for services. In my personal communication with Officer Judd, he stated that families often do not know what there is out there for them, so if we had a way to connect the families to the resources, half of the battle would be won (E. Judd, 204).

• Decreased student enrollment due to lack of transportation-students and their families have had to unenroll from our school because we have no bussing system, are off of a major highway, and there is no city bus stop near our school. This makes it hard for students who do not live in the neighborhood to attend schools. Decreased enrollment also decreases funding to the school, making it hard to justify keeping certain positions or even staying open.

• Students who are living without vital resources are frequently hungry, lack proper hygiene, and dysregulated because of these things. Thus causing serious behavioral issues while at school and subsequently causing them to get sent home, which causes more stress on the family.

• Often, our students are hungry; and while we do have free and reduced lunch; many families do not know to apply or that there is help within the school system. Our district does not allow for us to give food to students; but when they are hungry, it is incredibly hard for them to learn. Much of the problem goes back to the transportation issue; however, if we could have snack packs in hypoallergenic foods available, it could mitigate many of the behaviors we are seeing in the schools due to hunger and lack of resources.
