- Substitution: At the most basic level, a calculator simply replaces manual calculations. For example, using an online calculator instead of doing math by hand . This does not change the task itself .

Augmentation: The calculator enhances the task, such as by providing quicker calculations or more accurate results than manual methods . Linda Kuiken, an experienced math teacher, notes that calculators facilitate understanding of mathematics by allowing students to shift focus from processes to critical analysis .

- Modification: The use of calculators allows for significant task redesign. Desmos, for example, allows students to create pictures using multiple functions with domain/range restrictions .

- Redefinition: Calculators enable new tasks that were previously inconceivable. For example, students can collaborate to create graphs and have other students recreate them by writing functions .

Substitution

Substitution is the process of replacing existing printed materials with updated or alternative versions.

Reasons include:

Content or policy updates

Design/branding changes

Shift to digital formats

Methods include:

Reprinting

Distributing digital versions (e.g., PDFs)

Replacing outdated materials in circulation.

2. Augmentation

Augmentation involves enhancing printed documents with digital or interactive elements using technologies like augmented reality (AR), enabling a blended physical-digital experience.

3. Modification

Remodification refers to updating or altering a printed document after its initial production. This includes:

Editing content (text or data corrections)

Digitizing via OCR for editing

Layout changes (fonts, margins, formatting)

Reprinting the updated version

4. Redefinition

A printed document is a physical record of information produced using mechanical or digital printing methods. It serves purposes such as distribution, reference, communication, legal validation, and archiving.

The activity is redesigned for teamwork and communication.

REDEFINITION:

Manila paper/cartolina is not only for posters inside the classroom but becomes the foundation for new learning tasks that cannot be done without technology.

EXAMPLE: Students first create posters or concept maps on Manila paper. Then (by scanning or taking photos) and upload them to an online platform like Canva They add audio , videos, and can also share their work with students from other schools or even other countries for feedback and collaboration.
