Each pair (from previous class) will spend twenty minutes investigating the historical context of its secondary document (or primary document, as the case may be). When you're done, post a summary on this padlet so that your classmates can read the information. We'll discuss the information as a class when everyone has posted. You'll have ten minutes to type for a total of 30 minutes from beginning to end. You should include the following information:
1. What
2. Where
3. When
4. Why- what caused it?
5. Historical impact- what happened because of this event?

The Communist Manifesto- Armandas and Garrett

The Communist Manifesto is a political pamphlet published in February of 1848 in London, England. It was written by German philosophers, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The Communist League was created by the anger from workers who were being oppressed by the higher classes. Then, Engels convinced the Communist League to allow him to draft a manifesto for the League. He enlisted help from Marx to create the Manifesto and although he procrastinated, he eventually finished it. It brought awareness to the vast economic gap between the high and low classes. It also led to the Cold War and the rise of Communism in countries such as China, North Korea, and the USSR. Armandas and Garrett

Italian Unification happened on March 17, 1861 and throughout a majority of the 19th century in Italy. It was unified by Camillo di Cavour. It happened partially so they would not be under the control of other countries and to become a single unified state and stronger together.. The memory of the unification is central to both Italian politics and Italian historiography because it was one of the most contested and controversial in modern Italian history. It was controversial because not every city wanted to be unified and to unify they did took part in the controversial action of taking over and unifying with Rome.

The Revolutions of 1848 took place in Western Europe, especially in France and Germany. A great deal of the revolutions happened around 1848, and were caused by oppressive European monarchies. The main historical impact is that they incited pessimism in European liberals. Pessimism then spread and became wildly popular around Europe. The spread of pessimism then lead to an increase in free-thought.

In Germany during the late 19th century, the Jewish Banker Bleichroder influenced much of early Germany's development. He became Bismarck's greatest confidant, oversaw international spy networks, and managed German funds through educated investing. They became close after Bleichroder was given control of both Prussia's monetary assets and Bismarck's own private assets. This allowed Bleichroder to rise to a greater political stature. By hiring Bleichsroder, the Austrian banking family of the Rothschild's were ousted and gave them greater Autonomy from Austria. Alongside this, through his influence, the new German state would become a larger economic power in Europe and abroad.

The Crimean war was a Religious War between the alliance of Britain, France, The Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia who supported the Catholic cause and the Orthodox power of Russia about the rights of Christian minorities. Caricatures were used as propaganda and were utilized by Great Britain. Caricatures originated in Russia but were adapted by England. The Crimean war was fought on the Crimean Peninsula. The Crimean War began 1853 and ended in March of 1856. The cause of the Crimean War was the split of the Holy Roman Empire where the east became Orthodox and the west was Catholic. This led to the rising tensions between the two Christian factions. The overall historical impact was the continued use of caricatures as propaganda.

It was the joining of thirty-eight states to form a unified Germany under the same political administration. This happened on January 18th 1871. This happened in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles in France when the princes of the German states came together to pick a new emperor for Germany. A sense of nationalism, speaking the same language, and the forming of alliances were the reasons for unification. Because of this unification Germany was created.

Finland abandoned the protection of the Swedes and instead sought protection from the Russians. This heightened Swedish Russo-phobia and caused the Swedish people and government attempt to get Finland and gain power elsewhere. From then on Sweden cooperated with Scandinavian countries and they all become Russian hating friends. This takes place in Scandinavia, Finland, and Russia. This all takes places from the 18th-19th centuries. Sweden kept fighting wars with Russia and Finland took the brunt of Russian force due to proximity. This caused the Finns to get fed up and move under Russian protection. The events that followed was a increased hatred for Russia by Swedes and increased cooperation betwixt Scandinavian countries.

Henry Grey was strongly against Britain's involvement in the Crimean War, which was fought in Eastern Europe from October 1852 to March 1856. The Crimean War was caused by the growth of Russian power in Eastern Europe, which included Russia attempting to take substantial amounts of territory, as well as a decrease in Ottoman power. As a result of the Crimean War, Britain decided to withdraw from European continental affairs, France became the new European powerhouse, and tensions arose between Russia and Austria. Additionally, the unification of Italy became an idea, the Balkans remained unstable, the Ottomans continues to grow weaker, and Serbia begins a nationalist movement to unite the Slavs in the Balkans.
