However I did use selective colour and colour graded the whole image to give an early morning feel to it. 
This is my first time using abstract shapes to create art in this way, so it was fun using the clipping mask for something simple that still resulted in something pleasant.
The drop shadow in the fx panel was also a nice touch. I added dirt on the face by changing the blending style of the imported image to multiply and pressed 'cmd J' to duplicate that layer. I moved the layer into another position and repeated this process until I had the desired effect.
