I grew up with a reading and writing disability so as I was growing up I hated to read because it made me feel like I was stupid because it would take me so long and I would always get all the worlds messed up in my head. I had one teacher in particular that made me hate reading because she would yell at me till I read a page out loud. I think that experience alone really made it hard for me to read as a kid. I remember sitting there just staring at pictures in a book pretending to read because I did not know how and was very embraced about it that I would refuse to ask for help. In 4th grade, I remember being able to read the Goosebumps books and how they were the only thing I would read because I thought they were fun to be able to choose your own endings.

When I first started 6th grade I had just moved to a new school and we were homeless right before we moved to this new school. I think that that helped me to fall in love with reading. My teacher introduced me to audiobooks. Where I could read and listen to the same time and that changed my world. I struggled for so long with reading that I felt I would never enjoy it. The first book I ever read and enjoyed was The City Of Ember and it is to this day one of my favorite books I have ever read. It was the first book I read with a recorder. Also, the story spoke to me as a kid, I wanted to leave my home and go to something new so bad that when Lina did just that and saved her town, I wanted to be her.

After finding a love for reading I started to do a lot better in my reading and writing classes and I loved it so I kept reading. I remember going home after school and just going outside and reading an entire book because I could escape to their world and be someone I can not be in real life. It changed me, I felt more positive about life. I did not get to read for fun as much as I wish I could have in high school but I did enjoy almost all the books that were assigned to me. One was The Glass Castle, I adore that book. It always made me think of my life and how if I really tried to succeed one day I really could and I could be happy. If it was not for my High school English 1 teacher who assigned this book then I probably would not be here. I realized after reading that book that I could go to college make really make something of myself in life. She also helped me get into a program called Upward Bound that connect with App State. That pushed me further to go to collage

I read for fun about 1 book a semester now. I do not really have time to read more because of all of the classes and work I have. I really do not enjoy the readings assigned to my classes because they are nothing I am personally interested in. But this class has already had me change my mind because I have really enjoyed Fish In a Tree so far.
One of the things that really sticks out to me about my reading experiences in school is that if I did not have amazing teachers that had helped me to read and to understand it is okay to not be perfect then I would not be where I am today.
My all-time favorite book is The Giver. I was really excited to see it turned into a movie and I watch it at least once a month. I have read the book to many times to count.
