Billie Joe was starting to explore alternative music; he accredited Hüsker Dü as one of his early inspirations. “I’ve been playing music ever since I can remember, but when I first started getting into alternative music, I picked up [1986’s] Candy Apple Grey by Hüsker Dü,I was immediately blown away by that song.I wanted to be like Hüsker Dü when I started Green Day.” (Kahn, 2022)

Van Halen

Billie talks about the day he first went to see Van Halen perform he was given a chance to meet the band during the event he went on to call the experience heavy and emotional and expressed to the lead singer that he meant a lot to him as a musician and performer when the lead member of Van Halen began to express how he thought people saw him as alien when he played. Billie joe goes on to credit one of his inspirations as being the band the replacements he talked about the first time he saw them play while he was with his sister and said "It changed my attitude toward playing rock & roll. It humanized it, watching the Replacements, sort of half drunk but playing. They were [having] a good night, so it was great."(Brown, 2016) from this experience Billie joe took on a new view on how to preform live and is evident in his live performances where he would try to have fun and generally create a good time not just for himself but the audience.

chris cheney is inspirational to me because of his lyrical skills. his band the living end began their career in the early 1990s and during that time the came out with an album that gave us prisoner of society a song ment as a chant and rallying cry for the disheartened and frustrated younger generation at the time due to frustrations towards communication breakdowns and this trend continued as they would go on to make songs about controversial topics for example the song from the second album roll on is about a wharf strike from 1998 melbourne when a certain company used the guise of restructuring to fire his unionised employees.

prisoner of society

the living end produced and released a song titled "prisoner of society" which became a rallying call for the younger generation of Australia as it spoke out against the governments actions at the time. which allowed the younger generation to have a voice to finally be heard when they were initially ignored ignored.

50s rock and roll

Chris Cheney began his fascination with the 50s era rock and roll through his mother seeing as his mother was an Elvis fan and not to mention he'd like the stile of 50s greaser icons such as "He recalls seeing Chuck Berry or Buddy Holly on TV and being fascinated with the '50s look in movies like Grease."(ABC listen, 2016) he didn't care for the modern style from bands like nirvana and guns N' roses instead believing "I just felt that the rock'n'roll I was listening to was the real rebellious rock'n'roll. That was the original kind of punk rock."(ABC listen, 2016)

a song by the name good bye yellow brick road was a piece that brough strong memories of his family when he was younger and claimed hearing the song "I've always thought about songs very visually, so when Mum and Dad were playing Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, it's like watching a movie,"(ABC listen, 2016) as he dove deeper into listening to eltons works "Recognising the scope and the ambition of this epic Elton John song but also the ease with which it unfolds has been a huge inspiration"(ABC listen, 2016) and that the chord progression and structure was complex but didn't sound complex fascinating him further with a potential career in music.
