Meiji Japan by Frederick Li

Overall, Japan was able to modernize and industrialize at a quick pace by instituting reforms inspired by Western ideas and culture, such as military conscription and universal education. The country went from being imperialized to an imperial power themselves, conquering Korea, Taiwan, and Manchuria by the early twentieth century. Japan's geography aided it in its industrialization. Since it was an island, it enjoyed relative peace and stability, like Great Britain during the Industrial Revolution. This let them conquer their neighbors during the late 1800s.

Japan launched a surprise attack on Russia, and due to their reformed military, they won the war, and with it, land in Sakhalin Island and rights in Manchuria and Korea.

In 1853, Commodore Perry and his fleet of gunships sailed into Tokyo Bay and forced Japan to open up to the outside world and sign unequal treaties. Many other nations soon did the same. At the time, Japan had no other choice but to comply, because its military was inferior to that of the US. However, the event would trigger political and economic reforms that caused Japan to become equal to the US and European imperial nations.

Citation: Bentley 899-900

The Treaty of Portsmouth formally the war between Russia and Japan. This treaty was brokered by the United States and President Theodore Roosevelt. This was significant because it was the first time, in the modern world, when an Asian country was able to beat a European country. It was a huge step for Japan, whose goal was to be seen as equal with the Western powers. This was shocking to the world and an embarrassment for Russia, which led to government reconstruction. Due to this treaty, Japan gained control of Korea and most of South Manchuria ("The Treaty of Portsmouth").

This is extremely significant because China was a "big brother" in a sense to Japan, but in the 1890s, Japan had the power to invade and take over Beijing.
