Land: John Mackey and Renee Lawson Hardy opened up the first store in Austin, Texas that was initially called "SaferWay". They received $45,000 in investments to open this first store. Without any advertising, SaferWay gained popularity within the first few hours on opening day. About a year later, Austin suffered a massive flood, leaving the store under-water. John Mackey worked on opening up a second store on the other side of Austin in the mean time.

Entrepreneurship: John Mackey was enrolled in college, but was not a fan of the traditional classes, and ended up taking 77 electives that he was interested in. He was not a traditional student. He had no business experience coming out of college.

1982

Capital: After the initial SaferWay flooded while it was gaining popularity, John Mackey opened up a second store on the other end of Austin in 1982. They also figured out that selling just natural produce such as fruits and veggies was not gaining them as much profit as they could be gaining. So they incorporated a more diverse range of foods, to attract more customers.

Labor: John Mackey started Whole Foods with his girlfriend (at the time) Renee Lawson Hardy. Along the way to the first opening, John received $45,000 in investments, which only $10,000 was his own. After starting up the first store, he had a rich friend invest $50,000 to support the starting of a second store.

Capital: Whole Foods partnered with Amazon early 2017. Eventually less than a year later, Amazon officially bought out Whole Foods at the end of 2017. Amazon paid $13.7 billion.

1982

Labor: About two years after opening the first store, John worked to partner with Craig Weller and Mark Skiles to merge their other local grocery store, Clarksville Natural Grocery. That is when Whole Foods was born, which now included selling meat products. The first ever official Whole Foods was opened in 1982. Beginning in 1984 is when Whole Foods started to expand to different cities, and eventually states.
