One example of this was when one of the teachers stated that her students aren't grinding/playing with their pencils as much. This is a result in the energy that they are expending which helps them focus more when it is time to listen.

I think this article not only highlights how, we as educators need to allow children to be children but the importance of breaks between desk work. If you spend half the day trying to teach extremely bored children, you're wasting time, when you could instead be giving them healthy play time in between subjects to keep them active and interested throughout the day. I would love to see this model in Elementary Schools across America because it could help increase children's academic and mental/emotional performance in school and possibly in other areas of their lives.

I was shocked to hear that many schools are now cutting recess time. I think that it is important for children to be able to get their energy out and be active. Nowadays, children mainly sit around at home and play video games which is why I believe recess is even more important now that it was back when I was younger. Studies have shown that people who exercise often tend to be more focused and sometimes even smarter. I'm hoping that wherever I start teaching will still allow children time to play.

This article opened my eyes to see how children need to be cared for in schools. I was shocked to hear that some schools were cutting out recess for more academic time. Children already have a short attention span, so giving them less time to be themselves is not the best idea. I am glad that Eagle Mountain Elementary is going against the grain and giving children more time and freedom to be themselves. I hope that schools realize how important free time is for students. I know I will be allowing my children that time.

I was surprised to see how much growth they had experienced from using the new program. One of the teachers said that students had started to properly use their pencils instead of chewing on them or breaking them and their growth in academics had increased. I think this type of program should be used in other schools around the country as well. I will try my best to incorporate more time for them to play.

I will definitely make it more of a priority to give younger students more breaks.

I love the idea of giving children more time throughout the day to get up and play because it gives them a mental break. With the studies that have been conducted and the proof that has been revealed that shows recess helps kids retain information better, I am very surprised that education systems are trying to cut all recces together. I think that is a terrible idea and I hope that these school systems realize that.

I haven't had as much time to work with elementary aged children, but I have worked in a daycare for a couple years and even in my 2 and 3 year old's I can tell how much recess helps. Four times a day might sound like a lot, but these kids have an opportunity to get rid of some of their built up energy, so they are able to concentrate. Even at my age I feel like I need a break. If I take a fifteen minute every once in a while when I'm studying I feel like it helps me learn so much more.

This podcast really surprised me. I wasn't so sure about a school having four recesses but after hearing this podcast I think more schools should do this. The school showcased in this podcast has seen some amazing results. The kids aren't as fidgety, they are making more eye contact and the teachers are sharpening pencils less because kids aren't biting them or pushing down on them so hard. Recess allows the kids to just take a mental break from everything. As a little kid its hard to learn so many new things in a short time and by giving them more chances to get out their excess energy they are able to learn more effectively. Other schools believe that more instructional time is better so that they can get more learning in. More is not always better. In schools with more recess the kids are ahead of schedule. They have time to go outside multiple times and still learn so much. If the kids aren't focused or jittery they will learn nothing no matter how much time they set aside for instruction.

But the evidence the teachers gave of it being beneficial really made sense and surprised me. It was really interesting to hear that the students weren't biting, chewing or breaking off their pencils anymore because they were getting enough energy out throughout the day. I think especially for younger students this would be beneficial because it would be more like home where there is more room for play and breaks and it would ease them in more slowly so they could adjust easier in the beginning years.

Would time be allocated for moving the students? Would play in the classroom result in a similar effect? I feel I might find this system difficult to conceptualize because I study best when I focus only on that one topic with no breaks. However, I can see the benefits being a beneficial transformation. Letting children have some autonomy in their day, along with sharpening and developingsocial skills and moving is vital for children. I can see how this system would be best for young children. I think oftentimes I relate adult habits to elementary habits. I need to work on making my system developmentally appropriate.

I am actually taking the PE class for elementary school students and we are covering basically the same information. Recess and PE time gives the students the chance to release all that energy that all children have. Having students release all there energy makes the student focus better in class. I am happy that this podcast/article was based on factual information whereas he recess and PE were actually observed and not just speculated. Having appropriate time for PE and recess is beneficial not just for the student, but also the teacher. Teachers are able to ensure the students are retaining the information and students focus on the lesson. Recess and PE are essential to a childs development.
