Charlie is naive at the start of the book, he is quite inexperienced and as he says is a virgin to everything, except books. At the start of the play, he experiences a loss, and so does Jasper. This is difficult for jasper because he had a strong connection with Laura. Charlie has to quickly mature because he is experiencing difficulties at home, and in the 'outside world.' Jasper has a conflict with society due to the racism he experiences, and he does not have a parent to help him through this. Charlie has to quickly mature and basically grow up because he is falling in love with Eliza. They go on a search to find the murderer, only to be told that Laura ended her own life. The truth is exposed at the end. Charlie and Jasper realise how Corrigan is a horrible town that is run by a child abuser. Charlie ends up kissing Eliza and his mum runs off to the city. He may not realise now, but this will determine the person he becomes.

1. Generally naive - Charlie's lack of knowledge or experience with cigarettes or sex, Jeffrey being hyper-focused on cricket instead of connections with others.
2. Goes in search of answers to life's questions - Charlie's curiosity about the opposite sex, Eliza wanting to explore more of the wider world, Charlie's fascination with books and knowledge.
3. Emotional loss - Loss of the Wishart sister, loss of innocence as Jasper and Charlie discover the body, loss of identity as Jasper learns of his family history.
4. Matures gradually - Learns about expectations and systems in society (Police search, expectations of adult relationships with Charlie's parents, etc), realises that connections are important in small community.
5. Conflict between main character/society - Jasper's identity as an Indigenous young male, the mother wanting to leave marriage, Charlie wanting to leave small town.

1.
Charlie is an exmaple of a character who is naive and has not been exposed to many of lifes evils.

2.
Charlie and Jasper are two characters that aim to find answers regarding Lauras death.

3.
The death of Laura Wishart is an exmaple of an emotional loss that occurs in the first scene of the play. This death sets up the main story line that continúes throughout the play . Jasper was particualrly upset by this loss.

4. Charlie's character matures significantly, especially from Act 1 through to Act 2. He learns that the world is not exactly as it may appear.

5. The theme of racism and prejudice is prominent throughout the play. Jasper is a character that experiences racism as he is an Indigenous Australian. He his considered the trouble maker in the town and is the scape goat for everything that goes wrong. This is an exmaple of how Corrigans prejudice assumptions.

Charlie is slightly naive at the start as he doesn't understand much of what is going on around him. The story goes on and he starts to be included in real life things that are quite mysterious and make him re evaluate his position and search for answers. There re a couple emotional losses through the beginning but the big one is the death of Laura. Charlie continues to grow as a person. The conflict is more between Jasper and society over Charlie but
Jasper becomes Charlies friend so i guess that makes it Charlies problem with society too.
