The platypus is a semi-aquatic animal from eastern Australia, including Tasmania. It is one of the five species of the order of the monotrèmes, which lays eggs instead of giving birth to completely formed cubs.It is one of the few poisonous mammals : the male carries on the hind legs a sting that can release venom capable of paralyzing a human leg or killing a dog. The original traits of the platypus make it an important subject of study to better understand the évolution of animal species and have made it one of the symbols of Australia : it has been used as a mascot for many national events and it figures on the back of the coin of 20 cents Australian.
