Hamzah grows up

I want to make a documentary about a kid I met. Hamzah Marbella is a talented kid painter, some say he is a whiz when it comes to painting. He was receiving attention from the media and brands, but int he middle of all this, his father died. His father was a painter himself, and taught Hamzah and his siblings how to paint, he was the spark that started the talent. After the father's death, Hamzah and his siblings are left with their mother, who knows nothing about the arts and how to make money off of arts. The family slowly spent what little money they have. Now the siblings can't paint with the supplies left, dried up paints and used up canvasses that they can't afford to replenish. They are routinely scammed by art galleries by paying them too little, a fraction of what their paintings sell for. Hamzah and his siblings struggle to practice their passion, while their mother struggle to keep their family alive.

My documentary will be tackling the idea of "urban flow" as an economic system championed by capital. This will be juxtaposed with the current political situation in the Philippines, focusing on extra-judicial killing espoused by the state. The two seemingly disjunctive concepts are both systems of control rendering the (non-)movement of individuals as tools within the neoliberal global order.

The documentary will examine sites of struggle within controlled systems in the society.

I'm Jeremy and I am currently in my senior year in pursuing Bachelors of Arts in Film at UP Diliman. Aside from the student productions that I direct and write myself, I am usually a producer/production manager in student collaborations. I am a member of the academic organization, U.P. Cinema. I really am into directing, screenwriting, and producing; and I am eager to learn more and explore the other aspects of filmmaking in the future.

I am originally from Davao City, and my documentary will follow the survivors of the September 2 bombing at the Roxas Night Market last year. I believe that documenting reality through film as medium is very powerful and can be very artistic as well. My documentary will be set exactly one-year after the aforementioned incident and will show how these individuals are doing after a painful process of coping.

I believe that I deserve the bursary because my documentary aims to be more than just a moving picture - I always want my craft to deliver an important societal message, challenge and invite discourse, and show a firm stance by capturing the lives of my subjects.

The rest of the details will be in my application, and you can take a look at the productions I've directed in my showreel.

Thank you very much.

Looking forward,
Jeremy Luke

Hello!

I am Christelle, and I work with a group of friends in making documentaries. Our previous work dealt with informal communities within our university, where we learned how to ground our filmmaking practice on people’s needs and realities.

The documentary we want to make now is similarly a response to our surroundings. An inquiry into the grip of authority on ordinary people, as told through the filmmakers’ encounters with a retired foot soldier who worked under Martial Law, and against a landscape of oversaturated information in media. We want to start with this short creative documentary as part of a greater effort to disrupt the exercise of the authority of a few on the people’s claim to history. It is our response to the misgivings of pandering to grand narratives such as the People Power Revolution or the Marcos vs. Aquino binary. We want to make a documentary that illustrates history as an imperfect narrative, and human memory as frail.

Attached is our photo, outside the gate of our friend's grandmother's house, a paperbag of ensaymada in hand. Our friend had invited us over to listen to a vinyl record of a Marcos speech in the US. We met his grandmother, who remembers the Martial Law years with fondness, all while we've always heard worse things. Applying for this grant will help us document the process of our inquiry on those years.
