- gives money to the family, even though he needed it
- gives money to the girl, even though he needs it
- hates the idea of his sister getting married and wants to attempt to stop it because he thinks that the guy is sketchy and that the ONLY reason she is getting married is to help him, but doesn't stop to consider that she could be getting married to help her and her mother/family or if she just wanted to marry the man because she loves him (its clear that she might be doing it for the purpose of helping him, but he doesn't stop to consider any other possibility)

interesting how he has this trait, but it seems that people could be helping more than he is truly willing to help himself (the pawnbroker, kind off, his mom, his sister)

Why does Marmeladov talk to Raskolnikov?

Another reason why I think Marmeladov talks to him is because he sees the same suffering in Raskolnikov as he does in himself. It's this whole idea about masochism and how you can only fully understand the extent of something (whether it is love or life as a whole) with pain.
