Preconceptions abound, man.

As with all things, those stats we Kahoot-ed at the start of our discussion showed me my own misconceptions and preconceptions with the CC lifestyle in general. Post-seminar, the importance of WC work at the CC level seems as, if not more important, than at the traditional 4-year institution. As sites of anti-racist work, sites of transfer, just general sites of preparation, CC WCs can have some mind-blowing implications for students...assuming they're given the chance to function as needed.

I learned that WCs at a community college vary from place to place, and because of that, no scenario is the same. I also realized ev
en more than before just important WCs at these institutions are (particularly thinking about anti-racist tutor education & pedagogy)--and yet we still have to defend their legitimacy.

Who is sharing these stories? Who is talking about CC WC's and how is the field listening? Are CC WC's collaborating with Teaching English in the Two Year College, are there Special Interest Groups and other professional spaces designed for CC WC directors/tutors/practitioners? I think the most important thing I learned about today is sharing these stories about CC WC's.

There are a lot of hurdles and constant negotiations to handle to retain structure. Also, at a CC level, there seems to be more willingness to hire candidates with literature degrees to handle other duties such as the writing center due to literature based course release needs.

While all writing centers fall into cycles of having to prove their worth and fight to maintain high standards for their work, community college writing centers have to do this especially. Faster turnout, less full-time/on-campus students, and faculty resistance/misunderstanding lead to difficult situations where community college writing centers have to constantly validate themselves.
