I have been most engaged with participatory music when I'm with my dad's side of the family. We are Puerto Rican. Every time we have a social gathering, there is always music playing: Salsa music in particular. We either dance to the music, or play it ourselves while those who don't play dance! It is always such a fun and euphoric time, because we all feel connected to our roots and to each other. It's not a social gathering if there isn't Salsa music playing!

This is my family and I playing salsa music at my graduation party (I am playing piano on the right). It's not shown in the video, but everyone who wasn't playing was dancing! I really enjoy playing music with my family because it brings us closer together, and encourages me to dig into my roots and learn about Salsa music! Salsa music is pretty difficult to play, so I definitely struggle, but I have so much fun learning and growing as a musician. I've just recently started learning how to dance Salsa!

As an avid music lover, I have gone to loads of concerts to see my favorite bands and artists live. Seeing live music is an entirely different experience than listening to mastered pieces of music. It's raw, loud, and filled with other people who share the same love for the same art. I have only been to one Art-Music Concert for classical music, and while the music was awesome, I didn't feel engaged at all with the pieces. I like going to concerts that encourage singing and cheering and even dancing! It makes me feel involved and like I'm part of the art being created. So while I do enjoy presentational music where there's a distinction between artist and audience, I enjoy being able to sing along rather than sitting still in a seat, feeling totally detached from the music.

While this clip is very short, you can see the band (Foster the People) on stage, and you can hear the crowd cheering. The crowd is involved and a part of the concert. The crowd sings and dances as the band plays the music. There is a clear audience-artist distinction, but not so much that the audience has to remain quiet and uninvolved.

This photo shows a presentational performance. The musicians are on a stage, which is a raised platform to show that there is a clear distinction between them and the audience. However, the audience is encouraged to clap, applaud, dance, and sing along to the music being performed. The musicians prepared a structured setlist that they put a lot of time and practice into mastering. Their goal is to put on a show for the audience, who paid to be there. There is an expectation for the musicians to perform well, especially if the tickets were expensive. While the audience is encouraged to participate, there are boundaries in that the audience members are not allowed on stage (most times), and that they must stay where they are designated to be at the venue.

This photo is of a traditional Puerto Rican participatory performance. There are musicians playing music, while dancers dance and participate. Both aspects, the music and the dancing, are equally important, and everyone present is involved in some form. While this picture is very traditional, I do relate to it in the sense that my family will have parties where some of us play music, and some of us dance to it. It's an awesome feeling when everybody is involved in the music, because it is unifying and fun! I am grateful to have a family that holds music as a significant value.
