(Head, 40-43). Brille thinks of Span One as a family because they share the same way of living and move as a cohesive group. Brille also forms a friendship with the warder. They didn't like each other in the beginning,  but they began to help each other get what they needed towards the end. The author is saying that Uncle Chico would be happier dying in the place that he grew up then live anywhere else. One thing was Jim's gold watch. It had belonged to his father. And, long ago, it had belonged to his father's father. The other thing was Della's hair." (O'Henrey, 2). Knowing how important these two things were, she sold her hair to buy Jim a gold watch. When they exchanged gifts that night, Della realized that Jim had sold his watch to buy her combs for her hair.
