The short story "The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses" relates to the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family, friends, pets, and communities?" by showing the relationship of Span One. The author writes, "They lived all day on raw cabbage. They chatted and smoked tobacco. And since they moved, thought, and acted as one, they had perfected every technique for group concealment." (Head, 40-43). Brille thinks of Span One as a family because they share the same way of living and move as a cohesive group. Brille also forms a friendship with the warder. They didn't like each other in the beginning, but they began to help each other get what they needed towards the end. It even sounded like the warder became a part of the special bond in Span One.

The poem "The Stayer" ties into the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family, friends, pets, and communities?" by showing Uncle Chico's loyalty to Cuba. Uncle Chico's family was moving out of Cuba, the place he was born, but he decided to stay. Even when his family told him that he was crazy for staying, he did not give in.The author says " Why should he live in perpetual longing within exile." (Suarez, 16-18). The author is saying that Uncle Chico would be happier dying in the place that he grew up then live anywhere else. This shows that Uncle Chico has a strong bond with his community.

He is a very sassy dog, we have lots of scratches in our doors from how many times he opens the door himself. He is a hunting dog and loves retrieving doves. However, it seems like he would rather retrieve my socks then any bird.

The Gift of the Magi

The short story "The Gift of the Magi" ties into the essential question of "What are the special bonds that link us to family friends, pets, and communities?" by showing how much they value each other over themselves. In the story Della wants to buy Jim a good Christmas present, but all she has is $1.87 and her hair. The author writes,"The James Dillingham Youngs were very proud of two things which they owned. One thing was Jim's gold watch. It had belonged to his father. And, long ago, it had belonged to his father's father. The other thing was Della's hair." (O'Henrey, 2). Knowing how important these two things were, she sold her hair to buy Jim a gold watch. When they exchanged gifts that night, Della realized that Jim had sold his watch to buy her combs for her hair. They both sacrificed something that was very important to them for the happiness of the other, and it shows that they value their relationships with others more than themselves.
