The fear landscape is a room that morphs to fit her every fear, of which she must face. Tris has a total of seven fears, an unusually low number, with some of them being being forced to kill her family, drowning in a tank of water, and being devoured by crows. Tris' low number of fears and and even lower time to complete the landscape further puts her out from the rest of her fellow Initiates in her mind. Following the fear landscape, a serum is injected into all the Dauntless initiates which results in the soon to be crisis.

This serum causes the entire Dauntless faction to be turned against Tris, with every person infected becoming sleepwalking, mind-controlled husks trying to kill the Abnegation people. I say. 'I don't know,' he says. Tobias presses the screen a few more times, typing in letters that make no sense to me .. I see a flash of light .. He presses the screen again, and everyone on the first floor goes still .. All the tension in my chest unravels, and I sit down, heaving a sigh .. 'I have to get the data,' he says, 'or they'll just start the simulation again' .. I step forward with a few others and start jogging. We run for a few steps and then throw ourselves sideways .. I cling to a handle next to the doorway .. and finally a Candor girl grabs me and pulls me in. Gasping, I thank her."
