I am excited about this COIL project (Collaborative Online Intercultural Learning) because I think it is important to have intercultural exposure as a student. Getting to find out more about another way of life, another culture or language gives you a different world view and helps you see theories and themes and topics in your studies from another angle. I am excited to be working with you and getting to know you all! Bienvenido al curso!

The AHEA+ISEP Academy is an exclusive program that provides structured mentoring and best practices provided by Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). Lecturers on the programme are matched with collaborators in other countries and mentored through the process of designing a COIL/virtual exchange course. Over several months they work collaboratively and design a course they will teach collaboratively online with their respective students in their countries.

As a result, Norma Andrada from Universidad Del Salvador in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Claire Bradshaw from London Metropolitan University, UK, were paired together and tasked with creating a unique course to offer to their respective students in the UK and Argentina. Norma is the course leader and teaches BA Interpreting students in Buenos Aires while Claire is Head of the Subject Area and leads Education courses in London, UK.

Over the past few months, Norma and Claire have been collaboratively designing an online course and an opportunity for our students to participate in this collaborative online, international and intercultural learning experience.

You have been selected to take part in this exciting programme and Norma and Claire are looking forward to working with you over the next few weeks. We sincerely hope that you will make new friends, gain a different perspective and experience the joy of learning through intercultural activities which can then be directly applied to your own studies in your degree courses.

My name is Lucas, and I’m about to graduate as a conference interpreter at Universidad del Salvador. Even though I majored in conference interpreting, I’m passionate about teaching. In fact, I have been working as an English teacher for five years now. I currently work at a bilingual school delivering lessons to 4th grade students. My name is Prabhjot. I am a student of MA Education at London Metropolitan University. I was born and brought up in Punjab (India). I have done Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Education and Master in Information Technology from Punjab University Chandigarh India. I can speak three languages - Punjabi, English and Hindi. Again these were great slides and a lot of work had gone into them. There wasn’t much time to read them though as you moved them on quite quickly at the beginning. I loved having the QR code in there with the link to a related video – this was a nice interactive aspect. An excellent way to start by setting out the order of the talk so that the listener knows what to expect. There was some in depth and useful historical context of the impact of Uk education in other countries which I had not realised before. You had obviously done a lot of research and this showed in the detail you included. It might have been good to include a few more references. Once again the skill of the interpreters was on show here. I am amazed at how calm you manage to be at all times. Another impactful set of slides. I feel ashamed about my skills in developing slides when I see yours! I was surprised by the number of similarities that you found in your cross-comparison of the 4 countries you had researched. It might have been easier to find differences but this showed the amount of research you had gone into. At a couple of points there was a bit of an unclear overlap about whether you were talking about assessment methods in schools or in Higher Education. These are quite different in some countries, in the UK for example, schools are very exam based but HE is less so. Impressive simultaneous translation too as there was a lot of jargon and acronyms in there which are notoriously difficult to translate into Spanish as they are often in a different order. Although these virtual events have taken place with synthetic emotions, a sense of community and shared experience has been awakened, but also upholding the values of respecting existence in flux with differences. Share the idea that the hybrid society is not about the historical decisions of the states that displaced people, but about the harmony and unity of this generation.

Now Claire, one of the key figures in this programme, will show that she achieved the goal of the assessment without fear of deadlines, even if there were no marks or points for further study. She has only expressed a desire to reawaken a sense of community that is not driven solely by money and likes on social media, but instead enjoys some time together with pros and cons, spreading knowledge.

Norma as well partners this adventure with Claire, but under the eye and culture influenced by the differences opportunity offered that convert to positivism and want to change for their own students.

I am happy to be part of it, for the programme, for the people there and also that I saw my first teacher online in my foundation year.

When I got the mail about applying for this experience I never expected it to turn out has enriching and interacting as it did. It felt so unreal to learn a lot of similarities and differences between my home country and other countries of students involved in the project, such as Argentina. I got to meet like-minded students and make new friends , I especially got to expand my network and share my experience while I learn from others. When I first got the email inviting me to participate I wasn't entirely sure how it was going to turn out. I had heard of student exchanges but doing it online had me feeling skeptical at first. It only took the first meeting for me to realize that we were in for something really engaging, enriching, and most importantly, fun!

It only got better from there, interacting with students from other universities and countries, sharing experiences, cultural knowledge, differences and similarities was something truly special because we had lots of participants with incredibly varying backgrounds. And working on projects and presentations with them was so inspirational and thrilling, from the first class to the last one.

I am grateful for having been able to participate in this Programme, and I hope it continues to improve and develop into something even greater than what it already is.

Participating in the COIL project provided me with an enriching and unique intercultural experience that helped me not only to enhance my English but also to improve my social skills (since I'm a bit shy). I always thought that in order to meet new people from other cultures, I had to travel abroad. However, thanks to this project, I had the opportunity to interact with people from countries like India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and others, each with cultures and customs vastly different from my own in Argentina. I learned a great deal about these diverse cultures during each session, and I was fascinated by the similarities and differences I discovered.

Undoubtedly, it was a very fruitful and fun experience. Thank you, Claire and Norma, for this opportunity. I'm eager to participate in future COIL projects!

Additionally, the COIL project improved my digital literacy and collaborative skills. We used various online tools to communicate and complete our assignments, which taught me how to effectively collaborate in a virtual environment—a skill that is increasingly important in today’s globalized world.
