-largest warships had three banks of oars and were called ‘triremes’
-triremes needed 170 men to row it
-steered by long oars at the stern or back of the ship
-a sharp metal ram on the front of the triremes
-the sharp metal is to make a hole into the other ship and it cause the other ship to sink
-the triremes gets close to the enemy and tries to crash into  them
-the solder would jump onto the ship and damage and capture it
-their enemies were usually the Persians

  • The Battle of Marathon was remembered for the Greek soldier named Pheidippides who ran for two days and nights (150 miles) before the battle to call for help. The Greeks fought an army of 20,000. 
  • In the Battle of Thermopylae a huge Persian army was trying to invade Greece and 300 Spartans led by King Leonidas stood in their way. The Spartans were very brave and courageous, but unfortunately they lost.
  • In the Battle of Salamis the Persian king Xerxes watched from a throne set up on the shore, expecting an easy victory. The Greeks attacked with their boats when their enemies were stuck in a narrow channel. The Greeks won and it was such a memorable victory.

- Believed that in order to be a soldier you had to have a tough upbringing
- They would train for 23 gruesome years
- After that they were considered true Spartan citizens
- Boys were only allowed one tunic and would not wear any shoes
- They were not given much food which led them to steal
- Girls also had to be physically fit
- Spartan women had more freedom then other women
- They would run the farm, and give orders to helots (slaves)
- They would tell their sons,  ¨Come back with your shield or on it.¨
- This means that they would either want their son to come back alive with their shield, or die and be carried back on their sheild
