How do you define music?

Music, to me, mirrors the emotions, feelings, and attitudes of people in a way that conveys what we go through in the world and in life. The universal theme in each genre of music is one’s experience with the human condition, and how we react to the occurrences of life. The different styles or genres of music tend to reflect a mood or attitude toward an aspect of life we have experienced, or wish to experience, ourselves. When one listens to faster, more energetic, or rhythmic, music he or she tends to react physically through dancing, running or working out, or even singing along. Conversely, when one listens to a slower or softer type of music, one might react in a more calm manor, like listening to classical music when studying or falling asleep, or otherwise. On an emotional level, music reflects what we feel in any given circumstance, from celebratory to somber, or even painful, music, and we almost use this as a coping mechanism to reflect what humans go through in life. Personally, to tie down one musical genre as my favorite would be fairly difficult, as I like so many varying types of music from rock, jazz, folk, pop, alternative, R&B, and every other subgenera in between. The type of music I listen to ultimately depends on my mood, because I think there’s a certain type of comfort that music provides in allowing people to express, or relate, to one another what we feel or experience.
