The first time I taught this, I simply posted the questions on the board and read them to the students. Everyone was bored. In the second class, I had the students Round Robin as they read through the Five W's worksheet.

To introduce our CSI unit, I usually have a teacher-led class discussion of shows kids have watched and what kinds of things they already know about crime-solving (activating prior learning). This time, I did Mix-Pair-Share. I played the CSI theme song and had them mingle, then Rally Robin foods they ate during Thanksgiving, crime solving shows, and things not to do during a crime scene investigation. I ended with them back in their dissecting groups and I had them Write Round Robin (I think it's called) to record what they would do to investigate the crime scenes the next day. I had groups stand while I called on them and they gave answers that I vetted as they wrote answers from the other groups below a horizontal line. As groups finished they sat down.

We used Timed Pair Share to allow students to evaluate each others sketchbook assignment. Not completely a disaster, but close. The boys did not want to talk to the girls at all, and most students were uncomfortable critiquing each others work, even though the exercise was couched in terms of "helping" each other. (Students were given a rubric specifically designed for the exercise.) We failed to consider those who came to class without their assignment, which made it impossible for them to participate.
