The legislation made public that Missouri was a slave state and Maine was a non-slave state at the same time because they didn't want to upset the balance between slave and free states in the country. It also outlawed slavery above a certain latitude line in the remainder of the Louisiana Territory.

The Compromise of 1850 were made up of 2 resolutions Senator Henry Clay were in the works of making. The 1st resolution would mean California was a free state and the Utah Territory and New Mexico Territory could vote on the issue of slavery. The 2nd resolution would ban slave trade from Washington D.C., the nation's capital. But it would not ban slavery itself from the region.

The Fugitive Slave Act would help Southerners recover enslaved African Americans who had fled north. Congress would be prohibited from meddling with slave trade.

In 1852, the book "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was released. It was written by Harriet Beecher. The book showed his uncle Tom's life as a slave and gave a inside look of the lives of those that were enslaved.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act was made to end the Missouri Compromise and to split the territory into 2 states. What we now know it as Kansas and Nebraska. Nebraska would be considered a free state and Kansas would be a slave state.

Three distinct political groups occupied Kansas. Violence broke out between the groups who had a conflict with each other but when Kansas joined the Union as a free state, the conflict ended in January 1861. Thats when the era became forever known as Bleeding Kansas.

On this day Preston Brooks approached Sumner and confronted him about the false accusations he made against his cousin. Brooks then attacked Sumner not giving him a chance to explain himself. He was beaten so badly that he could barely stand.

Dred Scott was an enslaved man whose slaveholder took him to temporarily live in a free territory. The Dred Scott Decision was a ruling that Dred Scott, was not a free man. Just because he was taken to live in a free territory, that did not make him a free man.

On this day John Brown and some of his men attacked Harpers Ferry to seize the weapons. The raid lasted 2 days and ended with John's capture. He was then sentenced to death due to his actions.

Abraham Lincoln who was a Republican defeated John C. Breckinridge who was a southern democrat and Stephen A. Douglas who was also a Democrat. Abraham Lincoln's plan after the election was to lessen slavery.
