"I think I have changed my mind about things too, this last half hour. And you offered me your wine flask....Ulrich Von Gradwitz, I will be your friend"(pg. 192).
This quote represented how the wine flask symbolized the start of a new friendship. Beforehand, both men had despised each other, even though they had never met each other before. When the beech tree fell among them, Gradwitz offered his wine flask to Znaeym, which made him feel touched and started up a new friendship.

"And each prayed a private prayer that his men might be the first to arrive, so that he might be the first to show honorable attention to the enemy that had become a friend" (pg. 192).
This quote exemplified how even after Gradwitz and Znaeym became friends, each person wanted to prove that they could be the better friend by having their men show "honorable attention" to the other.

In the short story, The Interlopers, one important symbol is the wine flask. The wine flask symbolized the beginning of a beautiful friendship, that sadly, however, did not last. The wine flask is first introduced when Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym were both struck down by a beech tree, with no way out. Ulrich then reached inside of his pocket to get a grasp of his wine flask, since he knew that they would be in this situation for a while. Ulrich then managed to open the flask after several attempts, and took a sip of it, all while looking over at Znaeym. Suddenly, out of pity, Ulrich asked if Znaeym would be able to reach the wine flask if he threw it over to him. At first, Znaeym refused, because he didn't want to drink with an enemy, but then Ulrich explained how he believed that they were both fools and now wanted to be friends. Upon that offer, Znaeym thought about it for a while, and then he agreed to be friends.

As the story developed, the act of using the wine flask had not only brought the two men closer, but they were also able to accomplish teamwork. Znaeym and Gradwitz began to call for their men simultaneously, so it would be loud enough for their men to hear. In their heads, they were hoping that their men would come first so that they would have the honor of helping their friend. As seen in this situation, a small act of kindness and sympathy can blossom into a beautiful friendship. However, sadly, at the end of the short story, as the men were calling for help, a pack of wolves came, and were ready to devour them. The wolves had destroyed the fresh and beautiful friendship created by the wine flask.
