The amount of rainfall in 1977 was only 20 mm and the amount of rainfall in 1976 was 130 mm, which is a little bit better but not that much better. Since there was so little rain, it could have caused the finches to have less water causing them to die from dehydration. Also, it could have cause their living conditions to change because their not used to a drought like that.

The amount of Portulaca seeds per square meter in January 1976 was 8. In January 1977, the number of seed per square meter was also 8 but in January 1978, the number of Portulaca seeds per square meter decreased to 0. After 1978 the data stayed mostly the same at very low numbers which means the small beak finches didn't have any food because they could only eat soft seeds (or Portulaca seeds) and the Tribulus seeds were too hard to crack with the size beaks that the small beak finches had. The reason why I think these seed all of a sudden decreased is because there was a drought and they needed water to live.

According to the population chart in November 1976 there were 751 medium ground finches and in November 1978 there were only 243 finches. I think what caused the decrease in population is the lack of food that the smaller beak finches had and the lack of water all of the finches had. This shows that most of the finches died from lack of water or food. Also in 1976, the average beak depth was about 9.65 mm and the length was 10.71 mm and in 1978 the beak depth was 10.55 mm and the length was 11.61 mm. This shows that the beak sizes increase throughout the year and that is because the smaller beak finches died from lack of food.
