In this picture of my rock wall, the rock next to the pencil and the rock at the bottom of the picture have been weathered through a process called oxidation. The breakdown of rock is occurring with oxygen and water, giving the rocks a "rusty" appearance. Oxidation occurs when oxygens combines with iron in the rock and creates a new compound, called Iron Oxide (rust). This process is continuing. This particular segment of my rock wall has physical weathering due to thermal expansion. Heating expands the concrete, and when it cools, it contracts. The constant expanding and contracting causes the concrete to crack. Physical weathering happens slowly over time. This house was built 20 years ago, and I just started noticing cracks in the rock wall within the last six months. The picture does not due the slope justice. That downward slope looks much steeper in person than this picture is showing. At first glance, I thought the trees were just planted on a hill. However, the way the tree trunks are angled to the side instead of vertically upward showed me that this is a form of mass wasting. Mass wasting occurs over time when rocks or soil flows downhill due to gravity. This specific image is an example of a creep. This community was built in the 1990s. Therefore it has taken thirty years for this process to occur.
