The opening chapter of part 2 of In Cold Blood, sets the setting with many people close to Herb clutter cleaning up the crime scene. In this period of time the men, especially Herbs bestfriend, continuously questions and tries to understand which such thing would happen to the Clutters and reminisce about how they would go hunting together "it just shut you up. The strangeness of it. Going out there, where wed always had such a welcome."

The contrast Andy Erhart (Herbs bestfriend) makes about how River Valley Farm used to be and how it currently is now emphasizes how sudden the " normality" of the Clutters has left. The description of Herbs friends who would visit regularly for hunting, to now cleaning up the crime scene - emphasizes how the murders has not yet hit the people close to the Clutters and are still in utter shock.

Chapter 2

The death of the Clutter Family has led the Kansas Bureau of Investigation to assign a total of 18 different detectives. They hold press conferences to speak "facts but not theories". Dewey then tries making sense of the murder and they end up ruling out Bobby Rupp.

"He still entertained a pair of opinions, to use his word, "concepts"-and, in reconstructing the crime, had developed both a "single-killer concept" and a "double-killer concept".

During this chapter, Capote uses this quote to show how everyone has differences in the murder. Everyone is beginning to reconstruct the crime scene using different hints and leads that take them in different directions. Some concepts vary, and others draw a blank. Dewey tries to make sense of the murder but can't seem to make sense of anything.

]The town is left frightened and depressed about the Clutter's death. They are buying locks, bolts and keeping their lights on. If it was someone else, it wouldn't matter much but "that family represented everything people hereabout really value and respect... it's like being told there is no God.

The town has lost hope and basically their innocence as this family who everyone loved and respected was killed. Capote's mention of "God" is an allusion to religion and a reminder that the community has the same belief. That belief was shattered when the Clutter's were murdered.

Susan Kidwell was Nancy's friend. She reminisces of the times when they rode her horse, Babe, in the river and played together. Bobby and Her attended the funeral and Bobby insisted on being able to see the family but as soon as Susan saw the red dress on Nancy she retreated and kept staring at a man raking leaves across the street because if she closed her eyes she'd faint.

"So I watched him rake leaves and burn them. Watched, without really seeing him. Because all I could see was the dress."

While watching the man rake and burn the leaves the only thing that goes through Susan's mind is the dress. This analogy allows the reader to see through Susan's eyes and be able to depict the destruction of the dress they created together.

Chapter 9

Beverly, the second of Mr. Clutter's surviving daughters, had married Mr. Vere Edward English. Due to the unexpected tragedy, they decided to have their wedding earlier. A letter written by Mr. Howard Fox, a brother of Bonnie Clutter stated that he wishes nothing but the finding of peace to the killers. Taking a life can't change what has been done and he wishes they go to god for forgiveness.

Capote states in Mr. Howard Fox's letter, "The doer of this act is going to find it very difficult indeed to live with himself."

Capote foreshadows the guilt and paranoia that the killers especially Perry will begin to inherit. With this, we will begin to see how such a criminal act begins to affect the minds of the killers.

Chapter 4

Two days after the crime scene, Perry and dick are at a Café , Perry is reading a newspaper about their savage acts. Perry has been re reading the article over and over and has grown anxious in which he then tells Dick " he said I had a high degree of ' extrasensory perception. Sort of like having a built in radar".

Perry stating this emphasizes the emotional impact his wrong doings has left upon him in which he is now overthinking. Perry subconsciously foreshadows that they actually will be caught and will not be okay as Dick says. Ultimately revealing Perry's religious belief that evil acts creates consequences.

Chapter 8

Dick and Perry are on their way to Mexico, The black Chevrolet is filled with stolen goods and both men are in different emotional states. Perry " was leaving nothing behind, and no one who would deeply wonder what thin air he spiraled.... the same could not be said about dick" revealing that Dick might not be as relaxed as he claims to be. The visual imagery capote sets onto the reader of Dick living his " normal" family life as he lists who is cherished in his heart reveals that Dick might be deprived from leaving the country. As for Perry, he is full of relief and all the anxiety he was holding within has finally left. The contrast between Perry's and Dicks emotional state further reveals their "Normal" and "Abnormal" life.

Chapter 10

Dick and Perry are now in Mexico City, Once again Perry is contemplating whether they are okay or not and brings the subject of "Abnormality" , Since they killed the Clutter family. However Dick believes he is the opposite of Perry and as " Normal" the average man is.

Capote states " But Perry- there was, In dicks opinion, ' Something wrong with Little Perry'. " Because both men took part in such a horrendous thing, Dicks belief that Perry is the ONLY monster in the story is ironic to the reader since being " Normal" doesn't mean killing a family of Four In Cold Blood.

In Hartman's Café, they've been doing all the business they can handle. They're met with lots of old women who gossip and start rumors. We're then reintroduced to Mrs. Ashida and learn she's moving to Nebraska. She recalls her time with Herb Clutter and how while on the ride home she told him she couldn't imagine him being afraid and Mrs. Ashida states that there's no way Herb was afraid.

"After what happened to Herb and his family, I felt something around here come to an end."

Mrs. Ashida brings the truth to Holcomb. After the death it's not the same now it's all just gossip, rumors, and fear. People are locking their doors now which they've never done before as the Holcomb that's known for having years of droughtless beneficence is over.

Chapter 13

Throughout Dicks and Perry's travels through Mexico, Perry has basically been comparing his current emotional state to his reoccurring dream of a golden parrot who saves his life. They are on a boat with Otto and Cowboy, however Perry is anxious about the fact that him and Dick no longer have any money. Dick rubs his feelings off casually and Perry goes onto fishing where he catches " a big one" and internally thinks of his dream of the parrot once again.

Capote states " Perry's expression, his look of unflawed fulfillment...as in one of his dreams, a tall yellow bird had hauled him into heaven" to emphasize that because some things are going great for him in starting a "new life " in Mexico he has had an increase in hope. In Perry's dream the parrot saves him from being killed by a snake, which in this case the snake eating him alive would be the guilt feeling of his wrong doings has left upon him and not being financially okay. The parrot would be the fact that they are in Mexico and some things are going as he pleases, like catching the sailfish. Ultimately revealing that Perry has now recognized that he just might be okay with Dick AND himself, he will be able to forget about what they did in Holcomb, and the parrot will " [haul] him to heaven" which is inner peace.

Agent Dewey continuously goes into the Clutter home to investigate and finds it quiet comfortable and peaceful. He is startled by the scarecrow in the River Valley Farm as it is wearing an old dress that reminds him of Bonnie Clutter. Being reminded of Bonnie he also remembers Marie's story in which she "saw" Bonnie Clutter in her kitchen trembling with fear stating "To be murdered. No. No. Theres nothing worse worse. Nothing worse than that. Nothing". Capotes use of visual imagery of Bonnie struggling to put words in her mouth when talking about her own murder, engages the audience as it gives them a sense of sympathy and fear. The repetition of the same thought Bonnie is feeling also gives the reader a heart wrenching image of how she must have felt when Dick and Perry invaded their home.

This chapter emphasizes more of Dick and Perry's differences. Perry reflects on marriage and envies Dick because he's been married twice and has 3 kids. Perry says "those were experiences a man ought to have". Capote juxtaposes Dick and Perry to portray their ideas of their dream world. Perry's dream's are crushed as he hasn't been able to achieve his perfect life. He is stuck with the constant reminder of Cookie, the girl he almost married. Dick is worried about his family and how they will suffer the consequences.

It's 3am and the phone is ringing in the Dewey house with "leads" and false confessions to the Clutter case. Alvin reflects on the execution of the murder's, how it's gentle yet gruesome. Alvin reflects on how can a person commit an evil crime but still act with "tenderness". Capote states, "the expert execution of the crimes was proof enough that at least one of the pair commanded an immoderate amount of cool-headed slyness, and was-must be- a person too clever to have done such a deed without calculated motive." Capote uses words such as "expert" "slyness" and "clever" to characterize the killers as smart since they were able to pull of this murder so well that it has Alvin stumped and thinking at 3 in the morning. This goes back to the idea how Capote is humanizing the killers as he compliments the way they were so brilliant in the act.

Paul helm is working and is not in good condition. He is sad about his job and life, and how the Clutter house will probably get sold. He then thinks about something Mr. Clutter had said to him, " I hope they'll always be a Clutter here, and a Helm, too". This connects back to the idea of how the town is losing hope due to the Clutter's death. This specifically illustrates how it's affecting Mr. Helm and shows the effect Mr. Clutter had on Mr. Helm. By including "and a Helm too" it shows how Mr. Clutter and Mr. Helm had a bond so to not hear anything in the house, for there to be no life, is very draining for Mr. Helm.

People are worried about Alvin as all he thinks about are the murders. He states, " I've come to feel i know Herb and the family better than they ever knew themselves. I'm haunted by them. I guess I always will be. Until I know what happened." This again portrays how Alvin feels stuck and feels like he's getting no where with finding the killers. Then the chapter goes on to talk about Alvin's experience with previous murders that happened throughout the town. Capote states, "Measured against the case confronting him, were as squalls preceding a hurricane. This means how his past experiences with murder were nothing compared to the Clutter case that has Dewey stumped with no leads. This also is a reason towards his frustration as he has previously had good outcomes when solving for cases like these but has gone nowhere with the Clutter case.
