1. You need to find 1 example of a totalitarian regime from our present.

a) The name of this regime and who the leader is

b) When it exists.

c) What makes this regime totalitarian? = How are the people controlled and in what ways are their freedoms restricted? What laws are put in place to make sure this happens? What happens if you don't obey the rules?

2. What makes the control of the Padem totalitarian? Think of 5 things.

The people are controlled by having restricted internet so citizens aren't exposed to the real world. If rules are broken, there is a three generation punishment - meaning three generations of the family all go to a prison camp. Your also not allowed to have a gathering of more than three people at a time. There is no freedoms in North Korea and people don't have the right to religion, speech, marriage etc.

2
a) Rebellion isn't tolerated and is punishable by death. An example of this is people turning into an Avox (a person who is a slave for the Capitol and they get their tongue cut off so they are no longer able to talk).

b) Panem is run by a dictator, President Snow, and he controls everything throughout the 12 Districts and is responsible for the making of the Hunger Games

c) If you hold three fingers to your mouth then hold it to a tribute, that is a sign of rebellion and is like a slap in the face to the Capitol, therefore you are severely punished, such as public beatings, assassinations etc.

d) Everyone aged 12 - 18 throughout the 12 Districts are forced to attend a reaping, which is the ceremony in which the two tributes are announced and one the tributes are announced, they are sent to an arena to fight to death, where winning will make you famous but losing means death.

e) District 13 was the district that initiated the rebellion and because of that the capital destroyed district 13.

1. Kim Jong Ug
2. Present day
3. They only allow things to be shown on TV that they want them to do. They are fuelled with propaganda about how evil the outside world is. Most of the president's are family members and they rule through the military. They lie about how old the earth is and the year is 105. They control the people through fear, for example if you commit a crime your whole family could go to prison even if they had nothing to do in the crime. The people believe their leaders are god's and they never die. An election is held every 5 years but only one name is on the ballot list. Limited hair styles in North Korea this is done so people are kept the same and nobody can be different.

The Panem is totalitarian because:
1. They restrict what people can do in their day-to-day lives
2. They kill people who try to rebel such as the Avox girl and boy.
3. They promote the hunger games
4. They oppress the people
5. The people who are in district 1-3 are brainwashed by the success of the capital.

a) Iraq, Saddam Hussein
b) Ruled from 1979 to 2003
c) Reports of hundreds of thousands of public executions and human rights violations occurred during Hussein's rule. Even after the end of his rule, persecution against women, journalists and activists still are current - along with the further abuse of human rights within Iraq
1979 Ba'ath Party Purge: - Shortly after his rise to power, he called for a gathering of the Ba'ath party leaders. Where he slowly read out the names of 68 people, saying that they have committed treason - where these people slowly one by one would be removed from the room. The fear that he invoked on these people was unimaginable, not knowing if your name was going to be called - not knowing whether you were going to die or not. 22 of them were killed by a firing squad - this event gave Saddam incredible power through fear.

2. Panem is absolutely controlled by the Capitol.
-All the districts, and people in the districts are forced to work in their industry and only in their industry, they can't move to other districts or anything like that.
-Everybody in the country is ruled by fear. Fear of being completely obliterated. As the last time the districts rebelled, one of them was completely destroyed by toxic bombs, and to keep that memory alive - they show images of the destroyed district and hold the event known as the Hunger Games.
-If anyone is to rebel against the Capitol in any way - even something so small as making a hand gesture, they will be publicly executed, and sometimes just straight up shot. Even something as small as bad mouthing the Capitol results in this punishment
-The rich, and the government have complete control, and as such they have all the luxuries that anyone could ever want. While the districts, especially District 12 have low access to food, and most are completely starving.
