We do problem of the days already in class, but I believe it will be more in depth and students will have more ways to express their own learning styles and share. It will not only allow students to collaborate and learn from each other, it will help the teacher see the behind the scenes of their thinking and what they really need help on, or... are getting.

In a small group setting, students would probably be using manipulatives. Discussion would mostly be student lead, with little teacher interuption (aside from reading the problem aloud.)

Students are given a problem, and they glue it in their journal. I will then read the problem aloud for the class. Students have quiet think time where they work to solve it on their own. They can use manipulates or any problem solving strategy they choose to use. After a set amount of time, students will share in small groups their strategies for solving the problems. I will walk around during this time to find different students with different strategies to share. We will then have sharing time for these students to share with the class.

Students will be given a problem then allow them to use manipulative to solve it. I would then give other similar problems and move towards other more difficult problems, allowing sharing time.

During the first nine weeks, the children have used manipulatives for counting sets and becoming familiar with numbers, sets, counting, and cardinality. As the year progresses, we will get into word problems. We do have math discussions with ten frames and manipulatives. They discuss how many are there, how many are needed to complete the set, etc. They are setting up for additional learning for addition, subtraction, etc.

My students already do a problem of the day, but I feel I will learn a great deal more about the discourse the students will have among themselves and the language they will use and the math skills they will learn from each other. I want to be a better facilitator as well.
